Heisman Watch (Week 4)

1. Lamar Jackson | Louisville QB | Sophomore | Last week: (1)

Last week, we wrote “Jackson has been unstoppable” and that he is “special.” Well, those might have been understatements. The superstar quarterback led Louisville to a blowout victory over #2 Florida State on Saturday, by a score of 62–20. Jackson was so good that Michael Vick tweeted that he is “5x better” than he was in college. We cannot wait to watch Louisville face Deshaun Watson and Clemson in a couple weeks (October 1st, 8:00 PM EST).

Season stats:

61.0% | 913 YDS | 8 TD | 2 INT

49 ATT | 464 YDS | 9.5 AVG | 10 TD

2. Christian McCaffrey | Stanford RB | Junior | Last week: (2)

McCaffrey is a distant second right now. However, he is someone that could close the gap on Jackson. He’s only played 2 games so far (because Stanford had a bye already) but we know #5 is capable of a highlight play that could turn into a Heisman moment. He — like everyone else — will need Jackson’s play to fall off to have a shot, but the race is far from over.

Season stats:

53 ATT | 298 YDS | 5.6 AVG | 3 TD

10 REC | 106 YDS | 10.6 AVG | 1 TD

3. J.T. Barrett | Ohio State QB | Junior (RS) | Last week: (3)

Ohio State defeated Oklahoma 45–24 on Saturday night to all but end their playoff hopes. Barrett threw for 4 touchdowns, and should be able to pad his stats a little more next week versus Rutgers, but the end of November is when Barrett will be able to make his move at the Heisman.

Season stats:

67.1% | 650 YDS | 10 TD | 1 INT

39 ATT | 159 YDS | 4.1 AVG | 3 TD

4. Jabrill Peppers | Michigan LB/DB | Junior | Last week: (Not ranked)

Peppers is listed as a LB/DB by Michigan, and he also returns punts and kicks, and plays some offense. The guy does it all. He forced his name into the Heisman conversation after a dominant performance this past weekend versus Colorado, including a punt return touchdown.

Season stats:

25 TACKLES (19 SOLO) | 2.5 SACKS

2 ATT / 24 YDS | 2 KR / 81 YDS | 8 PR / 173 YDS / 1 TD

5. Jake Browning | Washington QB | Sophomore | Last week (Other)

Browning has the best passing stats so far this year, but hasn’t really been challenged yet. He will be the next 3 weeks, as Washington faces Arizona, Stanford, and Oregon. A win over Christian McCaffrey and Stanford would be huge for Browning’s Heisman hopes.

Season stats:

71.6% | 744 YDS | 12 TD | 1 INT

. . .

Other candidates:

  • Greg Ward Jr. | Houston QB | Senior
  • Nick Chubb | Georgia RB | Junior
  • Deshaun Watson | Clemson QB | Junior
