Heisman Watch (Week 5)

1. Lamar Jackson | Louisville QB | Sophomore | Last week: (1)

Though his team lost to Clemson last week, Jackson deserves to remain at the top of the Heisman Watch. He did all he could to get a win in one of the toughest environments imaginable on Saturday night, and was a touchdown away from winning. Jackson rushed a whopping 31 times in the 42–36 loss, and consistently made people miss; he simply glides through the defense. Something tells us this might not be the last chance Jackson gets at Clemson.

Season stats:

59.4% | 1,625 YDS | 14 TD | 4 INT

92 ATT | 688 YDS | 7.5 AVG | 14 TD

2. J.T. Barrett | Ohio State QB | Junior (RS) | Last week: (3)

Barrett kept his strong season going last week, as the Buckeyes defeated Rutgers 58–0. This week will be Ohio State’s toughest test so far this season, as they face an Indiana team that just knocked off Michigan State. Barrett is a very capable runner, but he’s done it so far with his arm this season. He could be asked to do more with his legs as the games get tougher.

Season stats:

68.6% | 888 YDS | 14 TD | 2 INT

44 ATT | 205 YDS | 4.7 AVG | 3 TD

3. Deshaun Watson | Clemson QB | Junior | Last week: (OC)

Somehow, Watson has not found the end zone on the ground so far this season, after doing so 12 times as a sophomore. He’s also thrown 7 interceptions, including 3 last week. Still, a win against a team like Louisville allows Watson to jump up to #3 in the Heisman Watch; he did throw for 306 yards and 5 touchdowns, and had 91 yards rushing. Clemson plays tomorrow night at Boston College, and needs to make sure they are ready to play after the big win. Dabo Swinney should have them prepared.

Season stats:

60.8% | 1,302 YDS | 14 TD | 7 INT

49 ATT | 211 YDS | 4.3 AVG

4. Jabrill Peppers | Michigan LB/DB | Junior | Last week: (4)

Peppers anchored the defense in Saturday’s 14–7 win over a very good Wisconsin team. He was recently called a “bigger, more explosive version of Tyrann Mathieu,” according to an NFL executive. Wow. Peppers is right in the Heisman conversation.

Season stats:

33 TACKLES (24 SOLO) | 2.5 SACKS

2 ATT / 24 YDS | 3 KR / 95 YDS | 12 PR / 246 YDS / 1 TD

5. Christian McCaffrey | Stanford RB | Junior | Last week: (2)

Stanford was dominated by Washington last Friday night, falling 44–6 on the road. McCaffrey rushed just 12 times for 49 yards, and has yet to score in a true road game for his entire career. It was a huge loss for both Stanford’s playoff hopes and McCaffrey’s Heisman hopes. The Cardinal play Washington State this week and Notre Dame in two weeks, but Notre Dame’s struggles this season would not make it a big win. A lot needs to happen for the talented running back to hoist the trophy.

Season stats:

91 ATT | 485 YDS | 5.3 AVG | 3 TD

17 REC | 149 YDS | 8.8 AVG | 1 TD

Other candidates:

  • Jake Browning | Washington QB | Sophomore
  • Greg Ward Jr. | Houston QB | Senior
  • Donnel Pumphrey | San Diego State RB | Senior
