‘Game of Thrones’ Star Emilia Clarke Launches New Charity, SameYou

Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke has started a charity that she says has been years in the making while also sharing her own moving story that inspired her to start SameYou, which is dedicated to helping young adults get increased access to neurorehabilitation. Clarke made the announcement on her Instagram page.

The SameYou name basically explains what the charity is about: helping people get more access to rehabilitation after brain injury and stroke and hopefully get back to their usual selves. As Clarke revealed for the first time in an emotional and inspiring piece in The New Yorker, she dealt with two life-threatening brain aneurysms with the first in 2011—the year Game of Thrones first started airing. You should read the article for yourself, but Clarke admitted that at her worst moments she “asked the medical staff to let me die.”

Thankfully, with the help of great medical care and the support of her family, Clarke was able get back to the her “same her”, and now she’s started this charity to help other people do the same. She’s also encouraging others to share their own stories of similar hardships.

As Game of Thrones comes to an end, hopefully Clarke’s story—and the fact that she dealt with a serious affliction that easily could have taken her life and/or ended her time as Daenerys Targaryen before it really started—helps everyone reflect and appreciate the preciousness of life.

You can donate to SameYou here.
