Strengths

Prototypical size with great power. Elite run-stopper. Natural athlete. Nimble feet for a big man. Long arms keep blockers from getting to his body. Great hand usage. Controls offensive linemen. Excellent overall technique. Holds his ground on double teams. Exceptional balance. Sheds the block and makes the tackle. Works extremely hard on every play. Shows upside as a pass-rusher. Has fun and is a great leader.

Weaknesses

Might need to come off the field on obvious passing downs early in his career. Didn’t make a lot of off-assignment plays. Could be limited to two-gapping role.

NFL Comparisons

Brandon Williams – Eddie Goldman – Shamar Stephen

Conclusion

Payne will bring just that to his opponents at the next level, as he has a unique skillset with tremendous raw power and athleticism. I like him best as a two-gapping defensive end or nose tackle that will immediately plug holes in the running game and could develop into an above-average pass-rusher.
