Strengths

Very accurate and productive passer. Generates a ton of velocity on his throws with compact motion. Quick release. Makes pinpoint passes at short and intermediate levels. Has a plus deep ball. Hits receivers in stride so they can run after the catch. Excellent overall command of the offense and huddle. Quickly recognizes the open man. Throws with touch. Elusive. Good vision as a runner. Can scramble to run or throw. Extremely confident. Great competitiveness.

Weaknesses

Benefitted from playing against flag-football-like defenses of the Big 12. Didn’t have to make tight-window throws in a spread offense. Footwork needs to be cleaner and more consistent. Stature will cause more passes to be batted passes. Has shown serious maturity issues. Could hurt his team with on- and off-field character concerns.

NFL Comparisons

Case Keenum – Russell Wilson – Johnny Manziel

Conclusion

Mayfield was an uber-accurate passer at Oklahoma that could make plays with his legs, but he didn’t have to make many tight-window throws and doesn’t have the athleticism or speed to consistently escape NFL defenders. The interview process would be key because of character concerns, but if he’s focused, I think Mayfield can be a very successful pro in a situation similar to what Case Keenum had in 2017 with Minnesota.
