2018 NFL Draft Scouting Report: QB Sam Darnold

Height: 6’3”

Age: 20

School: USC

40-yard dash: 4.85 sec.

Vertical: 26.5”

Broad: 105.0”

Strengths

Throws with great anticipation and touch. Moves defenders with his eyes and subtle movements. Works through progressions. Sees an opening in the coverage and rips it. Powerful arm that generates velocity to easily make any throw on the field. Creative when the play breaks down. Will take a hit to make a throw. Can keep drives alive with his legs. Very confident. Has a short memory. Showed up on the big stage. Has all the intangibles you want in a franchise quarterback.

Weaknesses

Needs to improve decision-making. Interceptions and fumbles are both a concern. Loopy release.

NFL Comparisons

Ryan Fitzpatrick – Andrew Luck – Jameis Winston

Conclusion

Darnold is a talented passer and crafty playmaker that has shown he can perform on the biggest stage, but I’m concerned about the turnovers at the next level. Overall, his intangibles might be enough to offset some potentially-fatal turnover flaws at the top of the draft.
