Strengths
Well-proportioned interior lineman with plenty of power. Very intelligent. Gets ideal push as a down blocker. Can turn and seal defensive linemen. Effective double-team blocker. Seems to always be balanced. Smooth as a puller. Strong hands that stay engaged when defenders are in his grasp. Aware as he scans the field in pass protection. Anchors and holds up against power. Works to the second level in the running game. Has the athleticism to easily reach backside defensive ends. Tries to take out two guys at once if he can. Experience at guard and center. 39 total starts in three years at Penn State.
Weaknesses
Will sometimes lunge and wrap instead of striking in pass protection. Foot quickness is just average. Can be beaten by speed.
NFL comparison
Zack Martin – Connor McGovern hasn’t received a ton of buzz leading up to the draft, but while he’s not as good a prospect as Martin, he is similar player as an all-around guard that can dominate in the running game.
Conclusion
Overall, Connor McGovern is simply a solid interior offensive lineman that has an ideal blend of power, intelligence, and experience to make an immediate impact and be a long-term starter. I think McGovern is a clear top-five guard/center in this year’s class.
Great last name.
Good to learn more about these guys before the draft.
