Strengths
Blazing speedster that routinely takes the top off the defense. Top-notch acceleration. Does an exceptional job tracking the deep ball. Good hands. Gets his feet down on the boundary. Makes plays at all three levels. Played both outside and in the slot. Dangerous on drags, bubble screens, and jet sweeps. Finds the intermediate holes against zone coverage. Knows how to get open on broken plays. Glider in the open field. Shows some toughness catching the ball over the middle and usually won’t give himself up as a runner. Simply runs away from people after the catch. Elusive. Plus contact balance for his size.
Weaknesses
Slight frame. Concerns about overall durability. Dealing with a Lisfranc injury that forced him to miss the entire pre-draft process. Doesn’t run a polished route tree. Lacks subtleness on double moves. Curiously wasn’t used as a returner at Oklahoma.
NFL comparison
DeSean Jackson – Based purely on speed, receiving skills, and play style, this is a clean comp, but it’s worth noting that Marquise Brown is a) tougher than Jackson both before and after the catch, and b) doesn’t offer the same special teams value.
Conclusion
Overall, Marquise Brown demands constant help over the top as a dynamic deep threat, but he can also catch the ball underneath and take it to the house. While durability is a real concern, Brown would be the perfect complimentary piece to a No. 1 possession receiver similar to Davante Adams in Green Bay.
