Strengths

Intelligent and experienced. Plus length and overall size. Very quick processor. Reacts and runs to the action. Great awareness/instincts as a deep safety. Maximizes range in coverage. Superb play recognition. Reads the quarterback’s eyes. Breaks up passes at the catch point. Locates the ball in the air. Very good ball skills. Has the skillset to defend tight ends in man coverage. Comfortable coming up in run support. Dependable tackler that breaks down in space. Takes great angles to the ball. Top-notch pursuit. Gets in on every tackle he can. Plays with physicality. Will deliver a big hit if given a chance. Knows how to time up blitzes. Tries to punch the ball out on gang tackles. Defensive leader. High character and work ethic.

Weaknesses

Speed and overall athleticism might be average for the next level. Can get caught flat-footed at times in man coverage.

Conclusion

Overall, Reed is a very intelligent and instinctive centerfielder that will make plays in coverage and come up to defend the run. Similar to guys like Desmond King and Jaquan Johnson in previous years, I think it would be a mistake to overlook Reed as an early-round pick because of potential concerns about top-end speed/athleticism.
