Strengths

Tremendous size and length. Mean and nasty play style. Great athleticism and bend for his size. Instinctive nature to try to bury opponents. Understands how to use weight/leverage to win. Gets a defender on the ground and makes sure they stay down. Will throw/toss opponents around. Hands are huge and extremely powerful. Exceptional strength to engage and turn/move defenders. Will often annihilate an opponent he gets his hands on. Very effective driving on double teams. Ideal overall patience and smoothness in pass protection. Able to reach wide rushers with an easy kick slide. Wide and difficult to get around. Keeps hands in good position as a pass protector. Easily prevents rushers from winning with a spin move. Excellent tone-setter to have on the offensive line and team. Can get under the skin of opponents. Watches horror movies the night before games to mentally prepare.

Weaknesses

Pass sets can be slow dealing with the speed rush. Needs to do a better job closing off inside moves. Would like to see better mirroring for the entire play. A bit plodding on outside pulls considering athleticism. Struggles latching onto quicker players in space. Needs to avoid yanking opponents and drew too many penalties. Did not play very well and struggled squaring up defenders versus Iowa State (2021).

Conclusion

Overall, Penning is a bullying offensive tackle with great size and the demeanor you want in the trenches. He might be better valued as a Day 2 selection with some parts of his game that need to be cleaned up, but Penning should be a strong addition for a team that wants to get tougher.
