WOLF SPORTS PROJECTION

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas has retired from the NFL after seven seasons.

Thomas wrote a letter in The Players' Tribune saying that he's going back to school to pursue a PhD. Thomas was a big part of the record-breaking Broncos offense led by Peyton Manning, as the athletic former basketball player broke out for 65 receptions for 788 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2013 before catching 43 passes for 489 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2014, working as an excellent red-zone target for Manning. Thomas left for Jacksonville in free agency before Denver's Super Bowl 50 win after the 2015 season, and he played with the Jags for two seasons before playing with Miami last season. While he didn't win a Super Bowl with the Broncos, Thomas caught Peyton Manning's record-breaking 51st touchdown pass in the 2013 season. He was one of the best fantasy tight ends in the league during those 2013 and 2014 seasons with Denver.

The Dolphins officially cut Julius Thomas.

It was known Thomas would be cut for some time now. Miami will be searching for another tight end while Thomas will be searching for a new team. Thomas is only 30, and teams are likely to be interested in him.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

The Dolphins will cut TE Julius Thomas, according to Armando Salguero.

Salguero says the team will cut Thomas by the start of the league year on March 14, so it's just a matter of time. Thomas had a disappointing season after being acquired from Jacksonville last offseason, and it appears he'll be heading to his fourth team this season. The announcement of Thomas' release is likely to happen soon.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas (foot) has been placed on injured reserve.

His season is now over. Thomas hurt his foot early in Sunday's loss to the Bills but played through the injury. Thomas' season ends with 41 receptions for 388 yards and three touchdowns, as he showed flashes but was overall an inconsistent player all season. It wouldn't be surprising to see the Dolphins move on from Thomas and attempt to upgrade the tight end position, though he does have one more year on his deal. Either way, Thomas isn't a highly-reccomended fantasy option in 2018 fantasy drafts as of now.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas drops a touchdown in Dolphins' loss.

Inconsistencies that have plagued Thomas all season showed up again against the Bills, as he ran a nice comeback-type of route in the end zone to get open then dropped a throw right into his chest for a would-be touchdown. Overall, Thomas had two receptions for 15 yards in the loss. He's difficult to trust in fantasy lineups.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas catches two passes against the Patriots.

Thomas gained 11 yards on his two receptions. He was targeted on a deep ball, but he failed to adjust to a ball that was thrown outside and couldn't come up with it. Thomas will look to have a bigger game in Week 15, but he's difficult to trust in fantasy lineups.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas scores in win over the Broncos.

It was a nine-yard score, and Thomas finished with three receptions for 20 yards. With just 37 receptions for 362 yards and three touchdowns this year, Thomas isn't a recommended fantasy option in Week 14 or down the stretch when championships will be won.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas caught five passes for 52 yards in Sunday's loss to New England.

Thomas has at least one reception in every game this season, but he's not a recommended fantasy option, even in a good matchup with Denver next week.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas caught four passes for 30 yards in Sunday's loss to Tampa Bay.

Thomas needs targets manufactured to him to be successful. There are better players and fantasy options to consider in Week 12.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas scores in Dolphins' loss.

Thomas might've gotten his highest percentage of snaps in weeks, as he appeared to be in there for most of the game. He caught two of five targets for eight yards and a touchdown in the game, with the touchdown coming on a shuffle pass by the goal line. Thomas was also targeted on a sluggo-type of route early in the game, but it wasn't a great route and was easily covered. You're hoping for a touchdown if you put Thomas in your fantasy lineup.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas has best game of the season in loss to the Raiders.

Thomas caught six passes for 84 yards and a touchdown in a 27-24 defeat. After looking washed up for weeks, the veteran came alive, which possibly had something to do with Adam Gase shipping off Jay Ajayi and waking everyone up. The score was Thomas' first of the season, and he's on pace for a 46/504/2 line through eight games. He's not a recommended fantasy option against Carolina in Week 10.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas gets three targets in Week 8.

Thomas gained only two yards on two receptions against the Ravens, and it appears he's not really close to a full-time starter anymore. Thomas shouldn't be on fantasy rosters right now.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas caught three passes for 58 yards in Sunday's win over the Jets.

Thomas also committed a drop, which seems to often be the case with him. He did make up for it with a nice one-handed grab, though. Still, he's not a recommended fantasy option against Baltimore on TNF in Week 8.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas gets five targets against the Falcons.

Thomas caught three passes for 22 yards, with his long reception going for 12 yards. Jay Cutler also gave Thomas a shot on a deep route down the field, but Thomas didn't appear to do a good job of tracking or going for the ball. He's not playing well enough to be a recommended fantasy option right now.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas catches one pass in Week 5.

Thomas was targeted four times in the game but only caught the one pass for 15 yards. He's not a good fantasy option at the moment.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas does not play well in Week 4.

Thomas caught two of four targets for 29 yards in London against New Orleans. Thomas had a long reception of 23 yards against a busted coverage that left him wide open, but then on first-and-goal he was thrown a fade route that he did not make a good effort for. Dolphins head coach Adam Gase and the team are not going to be happy when the see the play on film, and it's fair to wonder if Thomas might see a decrease in playing time moving forward with Gase as someone not afraid to make changes to the lineup.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas doesn't do much in Week 3 loss.

Thomas caught three of five targets for 16 yards against the Jets. He gets the Saints in London next Sunday.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas caught three passes for 26 yards in Sunday's win over the Chargers.

Thomas should get more scoring chances in the coming weeks, and he's a touchdown-dependent streaming option, and could push for low-end TE1 value with all the injuries at tight end. Miami travels to New York to face the Jets next.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas scores in Week 3 preseason game.

The Dolphins tight end scored on a one-yard flat route from Jay Cutler. Thomas also had another reception, but it went for no gain. Currently going undrafted, Thomas could end up being a solid wavier wire pickup as he's back in Adam Gase's offense. Remember: he scored 24 touchdowns in two season with Gase as his offensive coordinator in Denver.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas catches one pass for two yards in Week 2 of the preseason.

Thomas had a bit of a back issue earlier in the week, but he's fine. He didn't draw a target from Jay Cutler (who played two series), but Cutler will probably look his way more in the third preseason game when they get more time together—it's something to watch in Week 3 of the preseason.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas can add "10-12" touchdowns to the offense, offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen said today.

Christensen noted that Thomas scored about that much with Adam Gase as his offensive coordinator in Denver. While he won't have Peyton Manning throwing to him this season like he did in Denver during his scoring outburst over a couple seasons, the Dolphins should utilize him more than Jacksonville did last year. Thomas offers bound-back TE1 potential in 2017.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Official: Julius Thomas traded to the Dolphins for 2017 seventh round pick.

The Dolphins announced the move shortly after the new league year began. Thomas reunites with his former offensive coordinator in Adam Gase from their Denver days. Gase is of course now the head coach of the Dolphins and will know how to utilize Thomas unlike the Jaguars coaching staff. Still, Thomas probably will not be a recommended fantasy option to begin 2017 in what is shaping up to be a good year for tight ends.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

The Dolphins are going to trade for tight end Julius Thomas, according to multiple reports.

According to reports, the Dolphins will send a seventh round pick over to the Jaguars for Thomas. After signing a big deal with the Jags, Thomas never really lived up to expectations. He'll have a chance to turn it around as the likely lead tight end on a Dolphins team that appears to be on the upswing. Thomas is still officially on the Jaguars, but this trade should happen at the start of the new league year.

The Jaguars have placed tight end Julius Thomas on Injured Reserve.

Thomas missed the last two games with a back injury and is now done for the season. Thomas' season ends with 30 catches for 281 yards and four touchdowns. The Jaguars are very likely to make big changes this offseason, so we will have to wait and see the new regime before giving judgement for Thomas' 2017 fantasy outlook.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas (back) is out for Week 13.

Thomas was going to face his former team, but he'll miss another week instead. As the fourth option in a terrible offense, Thomas could have been dropped a long time ago.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas did not practice on Wednesday.

After missing last week with a back injury, JT is not a good bet to suit up this week either. He doesn't need to be on fantasy rosters.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas does nothing in Week 11.

Thomas had three catches for 12 yards against the Lions. If he doesn’t score a touchdown, he’s probably not going to put up close to enough fantasy points to be in your lineup. It was a good matchup on paper this week against the Lions, but it just didn’t happen for Thomas. He can be dropped in standard sized leagues.

Julius Thomas | Retired TE

Julius Thomas scores in Jaguars Week 10 loss to Houston.

Thomas had six catches 24 yards and a touchdown. 4.0 yards per catch is less than ideal, but the touchdown saved his day. Despite the touchdown, Thomas is hard to trust as a fantasy option because you might get burned.
