WOLF SPORTS PROJECTION

Ryan Mathews | Free Agent RB

The Eagles have released RB Ryan Mathews, according to Ian Rapoport.

This was expected after Philadelphia added LeGarrette Blount, Donnel Pumphrey, and Corey Clement this offseason. Mathews is presumably fully recovered from his vertebrae injury, which is excellent news. Mathews is soon to be 30, but teams will certainly be interested in the services of the former first-round pick and near-1,300-yard back. The Ravens, who lost Kenneth Dixon for the season to a torn meniscus, are the team that first comes to mind. It’s also possible Mathews waits for other teams to be interested later in the preseason.

Ryan Mathews (neck) has been cleared, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said.

The Eagles will likely make a decision today on Mathews. It's very much expected that the Eagles will release the 29-year-old back, as he hasn't even been with the team until he arrived in Philadelphia yesterday and both sides seem to have moved on. It's great that Mathews is cleared from his vertebrae injury, as there was concern his career might be over after the injury late last season, and there will definitely be some teams interested in his services.

Ryan Mathews is reportedly in Philadelphia today.

According to Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News, Mathews is seeing his spinal surgeon today to see if he is 100% recovered from his neck operation. If he is, the Eagles will release him. It's a matter of when, not if, the Eagles release Mathews as this point, and he could become an appealing option for teams in need of a running back. Hopefully Mathews gets healthy and is able to be released so he can play somewhere this season, assuming he wants to continue his playing career.

Eagles running back Ryan Mathews is excused from the team's minicamp.

Mathews suffered a neck injury to the C6 and C7 vertebrae at the end of last season, and he's still rehabbing that while he's away from the team. The Eagles have made it sound like Mathews isn't in their plans, and the signing of LeGarrette Blount amplifies that. Mathews, who is due $5 million this season, probably needs to get to 100% before anything can happen with his future status.

Eagles GM Howie Roseman won't say whether or not they will keep running back Ryan Mathews.

It sounds like they won't. Thankfully Mathews has been recently cleared to workout. After injuries to his C6 and C7 vertebrae, Mathews' career was in question. Mathews is due $5 million this season, but he might not be back with the Eagles. If the Eagles do part ways with Mathews, they'll likely be looking to add another back to the mix. They drafted SDSU running back Donnel Humphrey in the fourth round, and signed Wisconsin running back Corey Clement as an undrafted free agent, but likely want more of a veteran presence along with Darren Sproles. This is looking like a running back by committee situation.

Ryan Mathews has a herniated disk in his back and is out for the season.

Head coach Doug Pederson said Mathews injured his C6 and C7 vertebrae, and it's a serious injury that will keep him out a "significant" amount of time. Pederson says they do not believe it is career threatening, but did sound concerned about the injury. Mathews actually hurt it on a 3rd-and-goal, then stayed in for 4th-and-goal. The C6 and C7 vertebrae are near the back of the neck, so this is obviously concerning and hopefully Mathews will make a full recovery for 2017.

Ryan Mathews doesn't find much room to run against the Giants.

Mathews had 18 carries for 46 yards and one reception for 16 yards in the game. He was also stuffed on a 4th-and-goal at the goal line, on a rather predictable run play in a goal line formation. Mathews will be an RB2/FLEX next week against the Cowboys, in a game where the Cowboys could be resting their starters for part of the game with the #1 seed in the NFC locked up.

Ryan Mathews surprisingly runs all over the Ravens defense.

Despite facing the number one run defense, Ryan Mathews had a great day, running for 128 yards on 20 carries with a touchdown. Mathews got great blocking and continuously gashed the Ravens defense. Mathews has the talent and as long as the Eagles keep feeding him the ball, he's a solid RB2.

Ryan Mathews returns and gets 15 carries for the Eagles.

Mathews had 15 carries for 60 yards. Rookie running back Wendell Smallwood went down for the game, and Mathews should get 15+ carries per game if Smallwood misses time. Mathews is just a FLEX option against the Ravens run defense next week.

Ryan Mathews (knee) is officially active for the Eagles.

There are reports that rookie Wendell Smallwood will get most of the work with Mathews working his way back. It's hard to trust Mathews as a fantasy option this week.

Ryan Mathews (knee) will play this weekend against the Redskins.

Head coach Doug Pederson said Mathews will play. He should step back in as the lead back for the Eagles. Pederson has preached running the football more, but they haven't done it the past few weeks. With the return of Mathews, that could change. Insert Mathews as an RB2/FLEX this week.

Ryan Mathews (knee) is out for Sunday against the Bengals.

This was expected. Mathews isn't a good bet to be ready in Week 14 either with this knee injury. He's an OK hold on your fantasy roster if you have room.

Ryan Mathews (knee) didn't practice on Thursday.

It's very unlikely that Mathews plays this week against the Bengals.

Ryan Mathews (knee) not practicing on Wednesday.

It doesn't seem like he will be able to play this Sunday, and his status beyond that is in doubt with Eagles head coach Doug Pederson all but calling the season, even though Philly is 5-6 and still in the playoff race. Wendell Smallwood will start on Sunday if Mathews is out and could turn into a solid fantasy starter if he's given a lot of touches as the Eagles evaluate for next season. Darren Sproles will keep his normal role.

Ryan Mathews | Free Agent RB

Ryan Mathews (knee) has been ruled out for MNF against the Packers.

Meanwhile, Darren Sproles is expected to play. Wendell Smallwood and Kenjon Barner will have bigger roles with Mathews out. Smallwood is the preferred play of the two because he is expected to get more work than Barner. Sproles is a good FLEX option.

Back from the dead: Mathews dominates in win over Falcons.

Ryan Mathews rushed 19 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns, adding two catches for 30 yards. After rushing for a combined 25 yards over the past two games, the Eagles fed Mathews and it paid off. He showed the potential that made him a 1st round pick in 2010 with a rare combination of speed and power. Mathews is tough to trust this week in Seattle, but his ROS outlook gets a huge boost after yesterday. Pick him up if he was dropped in your league.
