WOLF SPORTS PROJECTION

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald has retired from the NFL.

This is a slight surprise, as McDonald can still produce at 31 years old (this June), but he's going out after a solid eight-year career. The 2013 second-round pick of the Niners played four seasons in San Francisco and four seasons in Pittsburgh, recording 181 receptions for 2,036 yards and 15 touchdowns. The Rice product also had some memorable highlight plays throughout his career, particularly on runs after the catch. We wish McDonald luck as he transitions to his post-playing life.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

The Steelers placed Vance McDonald on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Steelers recently announced that a player tested positive for the virus, and it looks like it is McDonald. Now we just have to hope this is an isolated case that doesn't create a problem throughout the organization. Pittsburgh played in Dallas yesterday, but there has been little evidence of on-field transmission during games.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald cleared concussion protocol.

McDonald is good to go for Week 16 against the Jets, but he should probably considered more of a TE2 option for fantasy title games.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 15.

This isn't a surprise after McDonald suffered his concussion less than a week ago. The big tight end has to clear concussion protocol before he can return to the field for Pittsburgh.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (concussion) is out for the rest of today.

Despite the best possible matchup on paper, McDonald has just one reception for three yards before leaving today's game against the Cardinals. The bigger concern is obviously the concussion for McDonald, and hopefully he's feeling better soon.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald is being evaluated for a concussion.

McDonald is currently going to the locker room to be evaluated. We'll keep you updated on the veteran tight end's status.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (shoulder) is officially active for Week 5.

McDonald was able to practice fully on Friday, so it looked like he had a pretty good shot at playing today against the Ravens. McDonald is a TE1 for a matchup against a team that just allowed Browns tight end Ricky Seals-Jones to get wide open a couple of times last week.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (shoulder) is officially listed as questionable for Week 5.

McDonald is likely headed for a true gametime decision, but the Steelers face the Ravens at 1:00 PM ET, so his status will be known by 11:30 AM ET on Sunday. If active, McDonald would likely get close to his usual playing time and would be in the TE1 mix.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (shoulder) officially remains out of practice.

McDonald is looking shaky for Week 5 against the Bengals, but we'll let you know how he's listed on the final injury report ahead of the weekend. For now, expect McDonald to miss his second consecutive game.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (shoulder) did not practice today.

McDonald missed Week 4 after being doubtful and didn't seem particularly close to playing, so fantasy owners probably shouldn't get their hopes up about Sunday's matchup against the Ravens. The veteran likely needs at least limited participation on Thursday or Friday to have a shot at suiting up.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (shoulder) is officially inactive against the Bengals.

McDonald was listed as doubtful entering tonight, so this was fully expected. Nick Vannett will have a role after just getting acquired by the Steelers last week, but James Conner and JuJu Smith-Schuster are clearly Pittsburgh's most trusted fantasy options for Week 4.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (shoulder) is officially listed as doubtful for Monday night.

The Steelers are hoping McDonald might be able to make a push to play against the Bengals, but it's unlikely. The recently acquired Nick Vannett is set for a big role at tight end for Pittsburgh in his first game with the team.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (shoulder) officially did not practice today.

This is the first official practice of the week for the Steelers, as they play on Monday night for Week 4, so it’s not a huge deal that McDonald isn’t practicing. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is hopeful that McDonald can play against the Bengals, but he’s probably 50/50 at this point. We’ll update you with McDonald’s practice status the next couple of days.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (shoulder) is questionable to return against the 49ers.

McDonald might have been injured after he was tackled on his ten-yard reception. We'll update you when more information becomes available on his status.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald caught three passes for 39 yards in Sunday's win over the Bengals.

McDonald ends a breakout season with 50 receptions for 610 yards and four touchdowns, establishing himself as a low-end TE1 in one of the NFL's most explosive offenses. Turning 29 over the summer, McDonald is signed in Pittsburgh for three more seasons.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald catches one pass for 49 yards in Week 16.

McDonald got past Eli Apple, who appeared to slip on the play, for a wide-open reception down the right sideline on his only catch of the day in the Steelers' loss at New Orleans. McDonald is in the TE1 mix to end the regular season next week versus the Bengals.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald scores against the Patriots.

McDonald started the scoring in Pittsburgh's big Week 15 home win, catching a five-yard touchdown on a nice in-breaking route where he used his big frame to get position for the score. Overall, McDonald had tow receptions for 13 yards and a touchdown. Next week, he faces a Saints team that's been stingy against opposing tight ends this year, so there are probably better options in fantasy championships.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald catches four passes in Week 14.

McDonald gained 37 yards on his four receptions against the Raiders. The big tight end is in the backend TE1 mix for next week against the Patriots.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald caught four passes for 28 yards in Sunday night's loss to the Chargers.

McDonald saw seven targets and again worked ahead of Jesse James, but Antonio Brown basically hogged all the downfield looks. The monster tight end will get a chance to bounce back next week against the Raiders, who were just shredded by Travis Kelce.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald catches three passes in Week 12.

McDonald gained 27 yards on his three receptions against the Broncos. McDonald left the game briefly with a hip injury, but he was able to return; we expect he'll be fine, but it's something to keep an eye on. The big tight end is in the backend TE1 mix for Week 13 against the Chargers.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (hip) has returned for the Steelers.

Thankfully McDonald's hip injury isn't too serious and he's back in there at the end of the third quarter in a tie game in Denver.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (hip) is questionable to return against the Broncos.

It's unclear when McDonald was injured, but he's in the locker room getting checked out. We'll update you as more information becomes available on the big tight end's status.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald scores in comeback win over Jacksonville.

McDonald caught three-of-six targets for 27 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 16-13 in an eventual 20-16 victory. The 28-year-old has now scored in consecutive games after not finding the end zone since Week 2, and he will be firmly on the TE1 map for next week's matchup against the Broncos, who just allowed Antonio Gates to turn back the clock for 80 yards and a score.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald scores against the Panthers.

McDonald caught four passes (on four targets) for 44 yards and a touchdown in the Steelers' Thursday night win, with the score coming on a controversial reception on a throw to the back of the end zone in front of the goal post where McDonald appeared to be bobbling the ball, but it was not even reviewed. Teammate Jesse James later scored a touchdown on a reception in the flat, but fantasy owners will take this performance from McDonald. He'll remain in streamer consideration next week against Jacksonville.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald caught three passes for 25 yards in Sunday's win over the Ravens.

McDonald had a drop and was playing behind Jesse James at the end of the game, but he remains the main fantasy option for Pittsburgh down the stretch. At the season's midway point, the 28-year-old is on pace for 52 receptions, 692 yards, and two touchdowns. He should be considered a low-end TE1 option in a good Week 10 matchup against Carolina.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald catches all three targets in Week 8.

McDonald gained 47 yards on his three receptions against the Browns. The big tight end faces the Ravens next week, a team he had five receptions for 62 yards against in Week 4.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald rumbles to seven receptions for 68 yards in Sunday's win over the Bengals.

McDonald hauled in all but one of his eight targets in a huge victory over Cincinnati, as he was featured early and continued to be a force to bring down in the open field. There will be some disappointing games on a loaded offense, but McDonald is in a home-run spot against the Browns when Pittsburgh returns from their Week 7 bye, so fantasy owners hurting at tight end would be wise to look ahead.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald catches one pass against the Falcons.

McDonald gained six yards on his lone reception in the Week 5 win. This was a disappointing performance after back-to-back very good games, but McDonald will look to bounce back next week against Cincinnati.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald caught five passes for 62 yards in Sunday's loss to the Ravens.

McDonald also lost a fumble early on a great play by Tony Jefferson that resulted in a Baltimore touchdown, but he rumbled for a 33-yard gain in the second quarter to help Pittsburgh tie things up with three scoring drives. The offense fell apart in the second half, though, and the Steelers are now sitting at 1-2-1. McDonald is a high-upside TE2 for a probable shootout next week against Atlanta.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald rumbles for 75-yard touchdown in win over the Bucs.

McDonald caught four passes for 112 yards and a score, with the highlight coming on a catch-and-run in the first quarter where he delivered a powerful, unforgiving stiff arm to safety Chris Conte and easily sprinted down the sideline for a touchdown. The tight ends have been extremely productive so far this season for the Steelers, but McDonald and Jesse James have been unpredictable as they split time. Consider them both high-upside TE2 options for Week 4 against the Ravens.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald catches three passes in 2018 debut.

McDonald gained 26 yards on his three receptions. He had the same amount of targets (five) as teammate Jesse James, but James turned his five targets into five receptions for 138 yards and a touchdown. McDonald probably isn't going to take a clear lead role in Week 3 against the Bucs, so there might be better fantasy options out there at the moment.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (foot) is officially active against the Chiefs.

After missing the season opener last weekend, McDonald is ready to go for today’s game against the Chiefs. McDonald will step right in as Pittsburgh’s starting tight end, but he’s better trusted as a TE2 option for Week 2.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (foot) is listed as questionable for Week 2.

McDonald was a full participant in practice every day this week, so we expect he'll be out there versus the Chiefs. However, it's no lock, so check back in on Sunday morning for McDonald's official status. McDonald would have TE1 potential if he's in the lineup.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (foot) is out for Week 1.

This isn't a surprise after McDonald missed practice yesterday. It's not a great sign that he's already been ruled out ahead of the weekend, so just consider McDonald out indefinitely for now. The exact nature of McDonald's injury remains unclear.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (foot) did not practice today.

McDonald was a limited participant in yesterday's practice, so he's trending in the wrong direction ahead of Sunday. McDonald would do well to be listed as questionable when the official injury report is released tomorrow, but it's possible the Steelers decide to just rule him out before the weekend. McDonald says he's day-to-day.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (foot) was a limited participant in practice today.

McDonald hasn't practiced this summer with an undisclosed foot issue, but it's a good sign to see him out on the practice field in at least a limited basis for the first official practice of the week. McDonald might be on the doubtful side of things for now, but we'll track his status throughout the next couple of days.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (foot) is "close" to returning to practice on a partial basis.

The Steelers tight end says he's hoping to lay in the season opener on September 9 against the Browns, but that it'll be up to the team. It sounds like McDonald needs to get cleared before he can return to the field. If he could start practicing by sometime next week, it'd be a good sign for his Week 1 status. McDonald offers some upside as a tight end option at the end of fantasy drafts, but missing the entire summer is not ideal.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (foot) remains out of practice.

McDonald hasn't practiced since the start of camp in late July, but there's no indication on what exact type of foot injury he's dealing with. The Steelers haven't given any update on McDonald's timeline, so it remains a waiting game. For those drafting early, keep in mind that McDonald might not be ready for Week 1.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

The Steelers believe Vance McDonald "can be a No. 1 tight end."

According to Bob Labriola of Steelers.com, the team acquired McDonald last preseason because they didn't believe they had a true No. 1 tight end on the roster. Labriola believes having McDonald means the team won't be looking for a top tight end this offseason. However, it is worth noting McDonald has had some injury issues and missed five games last season with Pittsburgh; it wouldn't be surprising if they did make a move for another tight end if they like one in the draft. However, for now, McDonald looks like he could be a high-upside candidate late in 2018 fantasy drafts after he came on very strong at the end of the season—including 14 receptions for 188 yards and a touchdown in the Steelers' playoff loss.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald goes over 100 yards in the Divisional Round.

The Steelers featured McDonald more than usual in their first playoff game of the year, as he gathered a team-high 16 targets against the Jags. McDonald caught ten passes for 112 yards in the game, mostly working as a reliable underneath receiver on quick out routes and screens. The athletic tight end could have a bigger role throughout the entire regular season next year, and he'll be a player with sneaky upside at the very end of fantasy drafts.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald held to one reception in Week 17 win.

It went for five yards. Acquired in a trade before the season, McDonald caught 14 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown in 10 games for the Steelers. He will look to make an impact next month in a potential Super Bowl run for Pittsburgh.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald catches four passes in Steelers' win.

McDonald was used often early in the game by Ben Roethlisberger, catching a couple of big early passes. Overall, McDonald ended up with four reception (on five targets) for 52 yards. Next week against the Browns is an excellent matchup, so the athletic tight end is in TE1 consideration—with major risk—for that game.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald leaves game with a shoulder injury.

McDonald was playing very well against the Ravens, catching four of six targets for 52 yards. But his shoulder injury knocked him out of the game late. We should get more information in the coming days about McDonald’s status.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald scores in Week 10 win.

McDonald caught two passes for 16 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown that tied the game (following a two-point conversion). The former Niners tight end should get more involved down the stretch, but he can remain on the waiver wire in standard-sized leagues.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (ankle) is back in the game for the Steelers.

McDonald returned in the second quarter and appears to be fine after limping off with an ankle injury earlier in the game.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald leaves game with an ankle injury.

McDonald is officially questionable to return, as he limped off under his own power. He isn't have any receptions against the Colts before leaving.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald (knee) is out for Week 7.

McDonald was dealing with a bruised knee, according to head coach Mike Tomlin, and it's bad enough that he wasn't able to practice all week and won't play Sunday night against the Lions. The athletic tight end seemed to be getting very comfortable in Pittsburgh's offense, so this is unfortunate for him. Jesse James and Xavier Grimble will pick up the slack, and James isn't a bad fantasy option at tight end if you're struggling at that position with six teams on a bye.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald has best game as a Steele in Week 7.

The former 49ers tight end caught two passes for 37 yards, including a 28-yarder on a deep ball over the middle. McDonald is very athletic and offers a lot of upside for the Steelers, and it appears he's growing into his role with the team as he learns the offense. McDonald is not yet a fantasy option, but he's someone to watch moving forward.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald catches one pass in Steelers' win.

It went for 26 yards. McDonald isn't worth considering as a streaming option right now. The Steelers take on the Bengals next Sunday.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

The Steelers acquired tight end Vance McDonald from the 49ers.

The 49ers received a fourth-round pick from Pittsburgh, according to multiple reports. This is quite the get for the Steelers, as McDonald is a very talented tight end that can run the seams and fit right in with the Pittsburgh offense. Though he's arriving with under two weeks to go until the regular season, McDonald is likely to step right in as the primary receiving tight end for the Steelers. McDonald is currently going in virtually zero fantasy drafts, but he could be worth a selection in the final rounds or a waiver wire pickup during the season.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

49ers GM John Lynch: The team is "pleased" with TE Vance McDonald.

McDonald, who signed an extension at the end of last season with the previous regime, was made available for a trade this offseason, but he's still on the Niners. Lynch said they are "proud" of the way McDonald is competing and trying to block and that he's shown them a lot. "He’s competing in a very competitive room," Lynch said. "I think that’s a room where someone is going to have to separate themselves. He’s a big part of that. So, we’re very pleased with him right now." It could just be the case of Lynch talking up McDonald to get more value for him in a trade, but McDonald certainly has receiving talent and could end up being the starting tight end for the team this season.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald plays but isn't targeted in 49ers preseason game.

McDonald started the game and probably played longer than anyone else that started. There's some speculation that the Niners are trying to showcase McDonald, who was just signed to an extension at the end of last season and is listed as the starter on the unofficial depth chart, to trade him.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

According to Mike Lombardi, the Niners have made tight end Vance McDonald available for trade.

If true, this really shows the incompetence of Niners owner Jed York. The 49ers signed McDonald to a big five-year, $35 million contract before the end of the season. Former head coach Chip Kelly was asked if he liked McDonald, he said "yes," and then he was signed to the extension. Weeks later, Kelly was fired. Now with a big contract, the Niners are reportedly looking to move McDonald.

The 49ers have placed tight end Vance McDonald (shoulder) on Injured Reserve.

McDonald's season is over just a few days after signing a big contract extension. McDonald's final stats for 2016 are 24 catches for 391 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged 16.3 yards per catch and will remain a huge part of Chip Kelly's offense moving forward. With a new quarterback (perhaps Clemson's Deshaun Watson) next season that won't miss him as much as Colin Kaepernick has, McDonald will be a sleeper heading into 2017 fantasy drafts.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald injures shoulder, doesn't return, against Jets.

It obviously hurt the Niners offense not having the tight end they just signed to a big contract. We'll update you on his status for next week.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

The 49ers have signed Vance McDonald to a five-year, $35 million extension.

This is quite the sum of money for the 2013 second round pick, as McDonald has career numbers of 64 catches for 866 yards and seven touchdowns. The quarterback play hasn't been great in San Francisco, and he's made some big plays this season, so the Niners must be hoping the best is yet to come from their tight end. With Chip Kelly's job said to be secure, McDonald is a good dynasty hold in this offense. He will try to prove the Niners right starting this week against the Jets.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald catches two passes for nine yards in Week 13.

The 49ers passing offense was atrocious. Colin Kaepernick has throw passes behind Vance McDonald quite a bit this year. McDonald is a risky TE1.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

Vance McDonald caught four passes for 60 yards in Week 12.

McDonald has settled in the past four games. He has had 50 yards and/or a touchdown in the last four. He's been running the seam and getting schemed open in the Niners offense. He had a long of 35 yards on the day against the Dolphins. McDonald is a TE1 next week against the Bears.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

McDonald catches touchdown in 49ers loss to Patriots.

He had three catches for 46 yards and a touchdown. McDonald always has a shot at scoring as Chip Kelly's main tight end, but he is a low-floor option. He's a borderline TE1 for Week 12 against the Dolphins.

Vance McDonald | Retired TE

McDonald caught four passes for 50 yards in Sunday's loss.

It was a good performance with the Cardinals being tough against opposing tight ends. McDonald will be a low-floor streaming option next week against the Patriots.
