The Wolf Sports Newsletter: August 21, 2023

The Wolf Sports Newsletter is a weekly newsletter giving an efficient update on the recent happenings in the world of sports. In an era where X is a primary news source for many sports fans, you can think of The Wolf Sports Newsletter as a cheat sheet delivering key information every Monday. The focus is on football, but big news from other sectors of sports will also be included to keep you in the loop with all the action to start the week.

The Wolf Sports Newsletter is beginning in article form but will eventually also be delivered via email. Create a free Wolf Sports account if you are interested in getting The Wolf Sports Newsletter via email when available.

This Thursday will mark just two weeks until the 2023 NFL season! If you are not already a member, be sure to sign up for Fantasy Consigliere with fantasy football drafts coming up.

Rest In Peace

💔 Former Arkansas and NFL running back Alex Collins has died after a motorcycle accident.

Late-summer Signings

➕ Veteran running backs Dalvin Cook and Ezekiel Elliott have landed with the Jets and Patriots.

Preseason Highlights

💨 Falcons first-round rookie running back Bijan Robinson flashed in his first NFL action. The dynamic Texas product was an elite draft prospect and looks like a big-play waiting to happen.

👀 Steelers are looking good. One week after a strong preseason showing that included a touchdown from Kenny Pickett to George Pickens, the Pittsburgh first-team offense went off against Buffalo. Things got started with a 62-yard touchdown run by Jaylen Warren, which was followed up by a 25-yard dime from Pickett to Pat Freiermuth, who decided to bring back the dab.

👏 Broncos running back Javonte Williams played for the first time since his ACL tear last October.

😕 Also, we had a few players carted off the field. Patriots cornerback Isaiah Bolden’s injury led to the Patriots and Packers ending their preseason game earlier. Thankfully, Bolden was released from the hospital and traveled with the team.

The Washington Team Name

🪶 Native Americans want to change the Washington Commanders back to the Washington Redskins.

  • The Native American Guardians Association has gotten over 100,000 signatures on a petition to change the name back—which is a serious number that deserves legitimate attention.
  • For example, the White House is required to respond to petitions addressed to it when it hits 100,000, so we are in the territory where people must be paying attention.
  • Additionally, there was a lot of talk about how the new Washington ownership group led by Josh Harris, Mitchell Rales, and Magic Johnson that purchased the team from Daniel Snyder have used the term “Redskins” when discussing the team’s past and major success as the Washington Redskins.
  • The situation has been discussed by both news organizations and The Pat McAfee Show.
  • Overall, new team ownership clearly seems poised to change the team name from the hugely disliked Commanders. And going back to Redskins at least seems to be a small possibility given that Native Americans are largely in favor of the name.

Veteran NFL News

📝 Zack Martin and J.K. Dobbins have reported to training camp. For Martin, the All-Pro right guard of the Cowboys, he gets a new two-year deal. Dobbins—seeking a new contract and playing in a contract year—basically had no choice but to report to the team at some point, and he’ll be someone to watch all season with the running back controversies.

👌 Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz has been cleared from his torn ACL and looks set to play in Week 1.

🏈 Veteran linebacker Myles Jack has retired from the NFL. The former linebacker/running back out of UCLA recently signed with the Eagles before deciding to call it a career after seven seasons and 617 career tackles.

Trolling Level: 100

🤣 On the sidelines, Garrett Wilson did exactly what Broncos head coach Sean Payton, who publicly criticized Wilson’s offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, said he does not want his players to do.
