Today, Apple officially revealed its long-rumored video streaming service: Apple TV Plus. Coming this fall, Apple TV Plus is a competitor to streaming giant Netflix, and it will include Apple’s own original programming along with an upgrade to the current Apple TV app. In other words, it’s Apple TV getting a massive upgrade. Apple TV Plus was revealed via a bunch of celebrities and filmmakers.

The Apple TV app is being redesigned to allow users to stay on the app when watching their favorite shows and movies. Apple TV Plus will be available on most smart televisions (like Samsung, LG, and Sony) via an app, basically just like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are available on most smart televisions. One interesting note is that Apple TV Plus will also be available via the Amazon Fire TV despite Amazon Prime Video being a direct competitor.
For those with Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV Plus appears to be a lot like that. There will be original programming, along with the ability to access your subscription to premium networks like HBO and Showtime right on the app. Apple is apparently betting that their cachet and all the celebrity endorsers will get people to go with them over a competitor like Amazon—which has been offering original programming with the ability to access other premium networks like HBO for years—so it’s certainly not a lock for success. But Apple is going to pour money into it, and if they can get it to be a big part of their ecosystem like iMessage, this will be a huge win for them.
Apple also unveiled a surprise gaming subscription service, Apple Arcade.

This comes the week after Google unveiled their own gaming platform, Stadia. With Apple Arcade, you’ll be able to play games offline and seamlessly switch between devices—which might work similarly to being able to play the Nintendo Switch on the actual console and then docking it to play on a television. Apple will likely be pushing convenience and simplicity with Apple Arcade, which is also set to launch in the fall.
Apple also revealed Apple News Plus, which will cost $9.99 per month; and an Apple Card credit card, which will work with Apple Pay and Apple Wallet.
