Apple Announces New iPhone SE With Home Button Design

After weeks of speculation, Apple officially revealed their latest iPhone: the second-generation iPhone SE. The design of the iPhone SE is nearly identical to that of the iPhone 8 (released in 2017), bringing back bigger front bezels and the physical home button and TouchID. The iPhone SE is considered a “budget” smartphone, but—as you would expect from Apple—it still appears to be a high-quality product.

Apple’s product announcement reads, in part:

Cupertino, California — Apple today announced the second-generation iPhone SE, a powerful new iPhone featuring a 4.7-inch Retina HD display, paired with Touch ID for industry-leading security. iPhone SE comes in a compact design, reinvented from the inside out, and is the most affordable iPhone. The new iPhone SE is powered by the Apple-designed A13 Bionic, the fastest chip in a smartphone, to handle the most demanding tasks. iPhone SE also features the best single-camera system ever in an iPhone, which unlocks the benefits of computational photography including Portrait mode, and is designed to withstand the elements with dust and water resistance.

“The first iPhone SE was a hit with many customers who loved its unique combination of small size, high-end performance and affordable price; the new second-generation iPhone SE builds on that great idea and improves on it in every way — including our best-ever single-camera system for great photos and videos — while still being very affordable,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone SE features the industry-leading performance of A13 Bionic that enables great battery life, takes stunning Portrait mode and Smart HDR photos, shoots amazing videos with stereo audio, is great for games and super fast web surfing, and is built with the same industry-leading security features our customers expect. We can’t wait to get iPhone SE into customers’ hands.”

Basically, the iPhone SE is a souped-up version of the iPhone 8, with more speed and power along with a better camera. Many will hope otherwise, but the iPhone SE very well could be the last iPhone with a physical home button.

The iPhone SE will be similar to 2016’s popular iPhone SE in that it utilizes an older design with a smaller screen that some people prefer to the newer iPhone designs.

Even President Trump has stated his preference for the home button over the swipe found on the iPhone X and iPhone 11, and the market is certainly there for a phone like the iPhone SE. Thanks to a popular overall design and a budget-friendly price, the iPhone SE is expected to be a best seller for Apple like the 2016 iPhone SE was a few years ago.

The camera remains a single lens, but Apple says the second-generation iPhone SE “features the best single-camera system ever in an iPhone with a 12-megapixel f/1.8 aperture Wide camera, and uses the image signal processor and Neural Engine of A13 Bionic to unlock even more benefits of computational photography, including Portrait mode, all six Portrait Lighting effects and Depth Control.”

The iPhone SE will be available in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB, and it comes in white, black, and PRODUCT(RED) colors. It starts at $399 for 64GB and goes to $449 and $549 for the two higher storage options.

The iPhone SE will be open for pre-order on Friday, April 17 and will be available on Friday, April 24.
