Apple Announces New iPod Touch; First New iPod Since 2015

The iPod is not dead yet. The innovative product that first released in 2001 with the original iPod is getting its first update since 2015. Apple just announced a new iPod touch that features Group FaceTime and AR support.

Apple today introduced the new iPod touch with enhancements to power, capability and communication at a remarkable price. The Apple-designed A10 Fusion chip brings improved performance in games, and for the first time on iPod, immersive augmented reality (AR) experiences and Group FaceTime, making it easy to chat with family members, friends or colleagues simultaneously. The new iPod touch is available to order on apple.com and in the Apple Store app starting today and in stores later this week.

The design appears to be the same as the last version of the iPod touch, with a four-inch display, physical home button, and cameras—so the headphone jack is still there. Apple VP of Product Marketing Greg Joswiak says the new iPod touch has “performance that is twice as fast as before.” Starting at $199 (for 32GB), the new iPod touch is the most affordable iOS device available, but the 128GB and 256GB will cost $299 and $399 respectively.

The new iPod touch will also offer the subscription-required Apple Music—allowing you to download music to listen offline while on the go away from WiFi—and Apple Arcade. The device comes in Space Gray, Silver, Gold, Pink, Blue, and (PRODUCT)RED.

There might not be much demand for the new iPod touch considering it’s another device to carry around that’s already similar to the iPhone (not to mention the price from $199-$399), so it’s possible this is the last-ever iPod release if sales don’t go well.
