As has been the case every September for a while now, Apple revealed their newest iPhones in a big keynote event. After months of rumors and speculation, the trillion-dollar tech giant revealed three new phones, all falling in line with the “iPhone X” name: iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR.
Again, it’s a full screen design for all three phones (aside from the cut at the top of the screen), with the iPhone XS at 5.8 inches, the iPhone XS Max at 6.5 inches, and the iPhone XR at 6.1 inches.
The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are both OLED screens, while the iPhone XR is the “budget” iPhone with an LCD display they are calling a “Liquid Retina Display”.
The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max comes in the same space gray, silver, and gold colors as last year, and the iPhone XR comes in six colors: white, black, blue, yellow, coral and red [(PRODUCT)RED product].
In a press release for the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, Apple said in part:
“iPhone Xs is packed with next-generation technologies and is a huge step forward for the future of the smartphone. Everything is state of the art including the industry-first 7-nanometer A12 Bionic chip with 8-core Neural Engine, faster Face ID and an advanced dual camera system that shoots Portrait mode photos with Smart HDR and dynamic depth of field,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone Xs is not one, but two new iPhone models, and iPhone Xs Max offers the biggest display ever in an iPhone with the biggest battery ever in an iPhone, delivering up to an hour and a half more battery life in your day.”
Basically, the new iPhones are faster and better versions of last year’s tenth anniversary iPhone. One big boost to note is that the dust and water resistance has been increased to IP68 level, so it can survive in up to two meters of water for up to 30 minutes.
Overall, it’s an iPhone. Some might be disappointed that the home button has been totally eliminated from all new iPhones, and others might not like the notch, but it’s a take-it-or-leave it type of deal if you want the 2018 version (and likely beyond) version of Apple’s ever-popular device.
The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max start at $999 and $1,099, respectively, and will be available for pre-order on September 14, with a September 21 release. The iPhone XR starts at $749 and will be available for pre-order on October 19, with an October 26 release.
