2021 is a huge year for the MLB The Show video game franchise. San Diego Padres superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. is the cover athlete for MLB The Show 21, and the game will finally be coming to Xbox for the first time ever. A trailer was also dropped to accompany the announcement.
No gameplay was shown, as the focus is instead on the ultra-exciting Fernando Tatis Jr. (and his bat-flipping can be seen on the front cover of the game), with the tagline, “The Game Has Changed”, before showing the available consoles for The Show 21: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
The Sony and San Diego Studio baseball franchise had been a PlayStation exclusive since its first release in 2006. Xbox hasn’t had a simulation-style baseball game since MLB 2K13, so it’s been quite a while. While Sony and PlayStation had been somewhat hesitant to do partnerships with competitors in the past (particularly for cross-platform gaming), they deserve a lot of credit for helping make this happen. All gamers can rejoice, particularly baseball fans that own an Xbox console.
This is clearly the smart move for Major League Baseball, potentially getting a new audience of fans engaged with the game of baseball via The Show 21—the Xbox release opens things up for them.
More information (currently only the digital version is available for pre-order for Xbox), including for the collector’s editions and the digital deluxe edition, is coming on February 3.
MLB The Show 21 is now available for pre-order and will release on April 20.
Finally! Xbox
