‘NBA JAM’ Could Be Making A Comeback

This year marks 25 years since NBA JAM first released across North America in the form of a classic arcade game that made over $1 billion (in quarters) in its first year. The game’s creator, Mark Turmell, recently told ESPN that he’s hoping the game is remade for the silver anniversary, noting that he’s working with Microsoft to potentially get something done (EA, which released a version of the game in 2010, still owns the rights).

Frankly, knowing EA, they might not be willing to allow another company to make the game; but the good news is Microsoft and EA do have a very good relationship that leaves room for optimism. Among all the sports video game franchises, NBA JAM is among the most iconic—if not atop the list.

Sports games don’t get much better than 2K’s NBA 2K series, which is a realistic sim-style basketball game that hardcore fans of the game love. There are also a ton of casual fans that just enjoy NBA 2K because it’s a great game. So the market is clearly there for a new NBA JAM game if done right. The high-flying dunks and “BOOM SHAKALAKA” certainly aren’t something that’s just stuck in 1993. Games take only a few minutes, and it’s probably fair to say “star power” in the NBA is overall probably higher than it was in the early ‘90s.

The fact that Microsoft is working on the potential remake means it’s looking like an Xbox exclusive. Microsoft might get a short boost over Sony’s PS4 if they are to secure and release the game later this year. One thing for sure is they won’t be making $1 billion on it like they somehow did with the original Midway arcade game back in 1993.
