The Best Televisions To Buy For Super Bowl Sunday

The most watched television event of the year will take place this Sunday when the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles square off in Super Bowl LII. Naturally, most people are going to hope to watch on an awesome television. Most of us are not fortunate enough to go to frigid Minnesota to watch the game in U.S. Bank Stadium, so we want the best experience possible via the television screen. Whether you’re hosting a Super Bowl party where you want to show off a top-notch entertainment setup or you want the best possible picture for yourself, these TVs should get the job done on Super Bowl Sunday.

Best Overall: LG OLED G7/W7

This is if money is no object, as LG’s most premium OLED television will cost you at least $10,000 for the 77” version. There’s the G7: a picture-on-glass screen that gives “perfect black.” And there’s the W7: the same as the G7 except it goes right on the wall like a piece of art (the “W” is for “wallpaper”). However, the 65” version of both, which is plenty big enough for a television, can be found at under $5,000 on Amazon for the G7 and around $6,000 or $7,000 for the W7 if you look around. It is worth noting the 2018 versions (G8 and W8, pictured above) are coming soon (the exact date is not known), and they add LG ThinQ AI, allowing the TV to connect with smart devices with voice control.

Best Deal: LG OLED C7

LG has a full slate of premium televisions, with the lineup in order from lowest-priced to highest-priced going: B7, C7, E7, G7, W7. They all feature perfect black, and while the B7 and C7 don’t have picture-on-glass, they are both on sale at this time. The C7 is a step up from the B7, so we’re going with that. It’s available for $2,699 at 65” and $1,699 at 55”. The E7 would cost you about $1,300 more, while you can get the B7 for about $200 less.

Premium Size Discount: Samsung Q9F QLED

Instead of OLED, Samsung created QLED, which used Quantum dots (Samsung says to deliver “perfect color”). The Q9F is their best television available, and it comes in 88”, 75”, and 65”. While the 88” is very pricey at $20,000, the 65” is currently $3,000 off and at a rather reasonable cost of $6,999. If you want a bigger screen with an excellent picture for a discount, this might be the way to go. Though I must note that personally I believe LG’s OLED are worth the extra money.

Friendly price: Samsung MU6290 LED

For only $500, the Samsung MU6290 LED in 55” delivers 4K and built-in WiFi, and it’s a smart TV. It’s among the top-three televisions for online Google Shopping searches, and the 65” version is $850. It doesn’t have as good of a picture as the other TVs on this list, so if you’re worried about picture quality this shouldn’t be your choice. However, if you want a solid television for a price under half a grand, the MU6290 is a good option.

Non-4K is an option

The Super Bowl isn’t yet available in 4K because cable and satellite (aside from a few channels) is still only at 1080p. And maybe you just want to get a television with a good picture for cable and are not yet worried about 4K content. While they’ve basically become discontinued, plasmas were previously the king of television, and they still give extremely clear picture that in many cases can be good as almost any television out there. I was shocked to see Panasonic stopped selling their televisions entirely, but if you can somehow get your hands on a VT50 plasma for a cheap price, you’ll be very happy with your picture during the Super Bowl. They are difficult to find online for a fair price, but you might be able to find one at a local store.
