The Samsung Galaxy S9 And S9+ Revealed With A “Reimagined Camera”

Samsung’s next big thing has been revealed, and it puts a major emphasis on the camera. The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ have “reimagined” the camera on a smart phone, and it’s the clear point of emphasis for the phone, as it was the entire focus for the introduction video.

The press release from Samsung, which says the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ are “Built for the Way We Communicate Today”, states in part:

SEOUL, KOREA – FEB. 25, 2018 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. introduces the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, the smartphones that reimagine the way we communicate, share and experience the world. Made for the ways we increasingly communicate and express ourselves with images, videos and emojis, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ drive innovation with Samsung’s most advanced camera ever. Redesigned with a new dual aperture lens that powers an innovative low light camera, Super Slow-mo video capabilities and personalized AR Emoji, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ ensure you never miss a moment and make your everyday epic.

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ deliver an enhanced entertainment experience with powerful stereo speakers tuned by AKG, surround sound supported by Dolby Atmos and a refined edge-to-edge Infinity Display – a key staple in Samsung’s design heritage. In addition, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will come with the new SmartThings app, which unites Samsung’s existing IoT services into one single, smart experience.

The physical changes to the newest versions of Samsung’s hit phone are modest—but the design of the Galaxy S8 and S8+, with the acclaimed “Infinity Display”, was already fantastic. One big welcome physical change is the fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone being moved below the camera. On the Galaxy S8, the fingerprint scanner was located right next to the camera, which 1) made it more difficult to reach, and 2) led to accidentally touching and smudging the phone’s camera.

“Intelligent Scan” is another phone-unlocking feature added to the Galaxy S9, allowing you to unlock the phone by looking at it, which has been a feature with the iris scan, but Samsung promises “Intelligent Scan” will make it simple to unlock even in low-light conditions.

And for the actual back camera, Samsung seems to have hit a home run with a “Super Speed Dual Pixel sensor with dedicated processing power and memory that can combine up to 12 distinct images into one amazing, high quality photo” and Dual Aperture, making photos look great in any lighting condition.

In today’s world where a lot of people want to show everyone else what they’re doing by taking pictures, Samsung is driving the camera emphasis to consumers who might be looking for the highest picture quality to share their photos on Instagram, Facebook, and other social media.

AND… the phone does have a headphone jack.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ will come in Midnight Black, Coral Blue, and Lilac Purple for the United States, with pre-orders starting on March 2. The Galaxy S9 will be $719.99 or $30/month for 24 months, and the Galaxy S9+ will be $839.99 or $35/month for 24 months.

The S9 and S9+ will be available in stores beginning on March 16.
