Top Ten Tuesday: Hopeful PlayStation Classic Games

The PlayStation Classic was suddenly revealed by Sony last week, with five of the 20 launch games announced: Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms. There are 15 games remaining, and this week’s Top Ten Tuesday goes over ten that will hopefully make the cut.

10. Silent Hill

Horror video games and movies are timeless, as some people love the thrill of being on edge. Silent Hill created an uneasy feeling for players, using more of a mood than straight-up spooks. The five different endings in a choose-your-adventure fashion gives the game a boost.

9. Metal of Honor

Call of Duty and Battlefield have become two of the most popular video game series of the last decade-plus, but it started with Metal of Honor on the original PlayStation. Steven Spielberg even worked on the story for Metal of Honor, and hopefully it’s one of the remaining 15 games that will be on the PlayStation Classic.

8. Spryo The Dragon

PlayStation didn’t have a character like Nintendo’s Mario, but Spryo the Dragon was one of the forefront characters for the console. The first game in the Spyro series had excellent graphics at the time, along with its great story following the purple dragon.

7. Crash Team Racing

If Spryo wasn’t the unofficial mascot of the original PlayStation, it might have been Crash Bandicoot. Crash Team Racing was basically Sony’s version of Mario Kart, but it still felt like a legit part of the Crash Bandicoot series.

6. Resident Evil

Silent Hill was already on the list, but Resident Evil was the original scary video game for PlayStation. This was a little more straightforward, though, as you knew what you were up against facing zombies and other creatures. Resident Evil is arguably the survival game that set up the genre.

5. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

It wasn’t as wildly popular as some of the other games on the list, but Castlevania: Symphony of the Night had an intense cult-like fan base that loved its story and gameplay. The classic game might be getting released on PlayStation 4, which indicates it stands the test of time.

4. Crash Bandicoot 2

The Crash Bandicoot series gets two games on the list, with the sequel of the original game taking a top-five spot. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back is regarded as the best of the series. Settings don’t get much better than N. Sanity Island.

3. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2

Yes, most people consider Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 as the best of the Tony Hawk series, and it undoubtedly is. But Pro Skater 2 held its own on the original PlayStation, helping the series set the tone as one of the best of any genre.

2. Gran Turismo 2

The graphics in Gran Turismo 2 were simply amazing for the time, and the relatively-realistic gameplay along with the realistic graphics helped make it a major hit. There were hundreds of cars to choose from, making it one of the most in-depth games of all-time.

1. Metal Gear Solid

There might not have been a more impactful PlayStation game than Metal Gear Solid, and people might riot if it’s not included on the PlayStation Classic. Solid Snake remains an iconic character, and the gameplay and game style made it a game you at least had to give a shot.
