Top Ten Tuesday: Madden 18 Cover Candidates

Sometime soon, EA Sports will likely announce the cover athlete for Madden 18. While there has been disappointment throughout the years over Madden, particularly unrealistic gameplay, this year’s game is big for EA, as they’re expected to transition to the “Frostbite” engine (as used in games like Battlefield). Here are ten candidates to be on the cover of a hopefully improved Madden 18 (the criteria is order of likelihood based on history of EA choosing their cover athlete).

1. Antonio Brown

AB put up over 100 catches and over 1,200 yards over the last four seasons and just signed a big contract extension with the Steelers. Brown also knows how to make deals off the field, and he reportedly received six figures for using Facebook Live after games, so picturing him on the next Madden cover is easy to do.

2.. David Johnson

After putting up 2,000 total yards and 20 total touchdowns last season, David Johnson is an excellent candidate for the cover of Madden 18. It’s been a few seasons since a running back was featured on the cover (Barry Sanders/Adrian Peterson on Madden 25), and Johnson would be a nice fit. Fellow Cardinal Larry Fitzgerald was on the cover of Madden 10, but he shared the cover with Troy Polamalu.

3. Le’Veon Bell

Bell has a chance to ink a long-term deal with the Steelers, and he released a rap album (it’s selling well) this offseason. Things would get even better for Bell if he was on the cover of Madden 18.

4. Ezekiel Elliott

The second-year workhorse gets a lot of love as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. Elliott would be one of the more popular choices for the game. Perhaps one of these running backs would lead to a much-improved run gameplay.

5. Julio Jones

Despite being very low key and humble for a superstar receiver, Julio would probably enjoy being on the cover of Madden 18. He actually might be more unstoppable in more life than in the video game.

6. Cam Newton

It seems that the 2015 MVP has been close to the Madden cover for years now. It seems bound to happen some day and, despite the down year, it could be on Madden 18. It’d be nice controlling him with the new frostbite engine.

7. Landon Collins

Richard Sherman has been the only defensive player to appear on the Madden cover, so chances are against a defensive player being on the cover this year. Collins would be a good choice, however, as he did it all for the Giants last season.

8. Dak Prescott

Even behind a great offensive line, 23 touchdowns compared to four interceptions is impressive. Prescott was accurate and threw with awesome touch and anticipation as a rookie, so maybe someone like him on the cover would lead to a needed change in the pass trajectory (and the passing game as a whole) in Madden 18.

9. Jay Ajayi

The bruising running back from London might help international Madden sales big time. On the field, Ajayi was a beast, putting up nearly 1,300 rushing yards despite being a healthy scratch early in the season. Dreads and all, he’d just look tough on the Madden 18 cover. (Hey, EA, maybe you should get something right and give Ajayi dreadlocks in the game.)

10. Matt Ryan

“Matty Ice” won the MVP last season and came up just short in Super Bowl LI, so he might deserve to be on the cover as much as anyone. However, he just seems more unlikely to be on the cover than some of these young skill position guys like Johnson and Elliott.
