Top Ten Tuesday: Ranking The Possibilities For EA Sports’ Video Game Reboot Announcement

Next Tuesday, EA Sports is set to announce the return of an old video game. So today’s Top Ten Tuesday ranks the top games we’d like to see return to EA’s lineup in the next few years.

10. NBA Live

Rounding out the list is NBA Live, which EA had been trying to get back off the ground in recent years without much luck. To be frank, NBA Live is here just to round out the list with ten games. Not many people would be excited about its return at this point.

9. NASCAR

EA Sports’ big announcement being a NASCAR game seems unlikely, but the sport has been gaining popularity from surprising places over the past couple of years, including NFL stars like Aaron Jones showing interest. Maybe that will continue with the return of the video game. With next-gen consoles, the potential to make a realistic NASCAR game is intriguing.

8. Skate

As we await more information on Skate 4, could it be the game that EA announces one week from today? It’s possible that it is a game that’s already set to come out like this, with next Tuesday’s announcement bringing more hype to the return of the skating game.

7. MVP Baseball

MLB The Show was brought to Xbox this year, so there’s less of a need for another baseball video game. However, MVP Baseball was a fan favorite back in the day, and marketable stars like Shohei Ohtani (a potential cover athlete?) and Fernando Tatis Jr. might have drawn EA back into the market.

6. NCAA Basketball

Changes in college athletes’ rights creates intriguing possibilities in a variety of avenues moving forward. College basketball includes many one-and-done players today, but those players would probably be happy to get paid a little bit to be included in a video game like NCAA Basketball. And most of the players that stay in college for four (or more) years would undoubtedly be thrilled to be in a video game for a few seasons.

5. NBA Street

NBA Street might be the best discontinued series from EA, but it only ranks at No. 5 because today’s league and players just don’t seem like they would give the same feel as the games (particularly Vol. 2) during the early 2000s. EA might have to go heavy on the legend content to get old fans of the game back in.

4. NCAA Football

We know that EA Sports coming back with a college football video game, and the July 20 announcement could be that it will now be known as “NCAA Football” again, with all the schools and player likeness being included in the game. It might have been too short of a timeframe to get that all worked out, and many feel the NCAA won’t have much power down the line, but it’d be a positive announcement if EA Sports College Football is officially coming back as the NCAA Football we know and love.

3. SSX

SSX and SXX Tricky in particular were classics from EA BIG a couple of a decades ago, and the nostalgia would likely be a huge draw if EA can recreate a similar game for today’s consoles. One notable issue is that a snowboarding video-game might be difficult to officiate for esports contests—you could do just straight-up races, but that might get redundant, and doing tricks was a big part of the SSX series. In today’s day and age, companies clearly have an eye on esports.

2. NFL Street

America cannot get enough of football, so adding another game to the mix (even with 2K Sports developing their own new non-simulation NFL game) is not a bad idea—especially for a series that was as popular as NFL Street. It’s easy to envision older players (former cover athlete Chad Johnson, for example) promoting the game on social media. Also, for as bad of a franchise as Madden is, EA can win some goodwill with consumers by bringing a respectable football game back into the fold.

1. Fight Night

Rumor has it that Fight Night is the game that will be coming back. Social-media celebrities have even stepped into the ring over the past couple of years, bringing more attention to the sport (good or bad). Boxing is the sweet science, and it’d be cool to see game creators take advantage of the power of the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 with a brand-new boxing game. Let’s just hope that legends like Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are included in the game.
