Join now >The 49ers released Jordan Matthews from the practice squad.
Matthews is being released to make room on the practice squad, but he has the relationship with the team that might lead to him returning at some point this season.

The 49ers are signing Chris Thompson to the practice squad.
Thompson has familiarity with Kyle Shanahan from when he started his career with Washington. The Niners are dealing with a bunch of injuries at running back and have done a lot to add to the position in the past couple of weeks. Thompson will look to work his way to the active roster as a veteran pass-catching presence out the backfield.

Andy Dalton (knee) won’t start in Week 3.
As expected, it’ll be first-round rookie Justin Fields making his first career start this Sunday against the Browns. Because of his rushing upside, Fields is immediately someone to worth considering in fantasy lineups if you’re in need of a quarterback.

The Jaguars placed James O’Shaughnessy (ankle) on injured reserve.
This was expected, and O’Shaughnessy will miss at least the next three games, so Jacksonville will rely on Chris Manhertz and rookie Luke Farrell at tight end. Perhaps the injury will lead to an expanded receiving role for James Robinson as the Jaguars try to find a way to get going offensively.

The Buccaneers placed Antonio Brown on the reserve/COVID list.
The Bucs are said to be fully vaccinated as a team, so Brown still has a chance to play in Week 3 despite landing on the COVID list in middle of the week. That said, he won’t be able to practice until he’s cleared. This isn’t ideal ahead of a massive Week 3 matchup against the Rams, but hopefully Brown is feeling OK and can play this Sunday.

Russell Gage (ankle) is considered week-to-week.
Gage appeared to get banged up a couple of different times in the Falcons’ Week 2 loss to the Bucs, and he’s now considered week-to-week and unlikely to play this Sunday against the Giants. The Falcons offense will probably look to rely on Mike Davis and Cordarrelle Patterson even more often with Gage out of the lineup.

Tua Tagovailoa (ribs) will not play in Week 3.
[UPDATE: It was further testing that determined the fractured ribs for Tua.] Reports that Tua’s X-rays were negative appear to be either incorrect or misleading (perhaps the initial tests for whatever reason did not pick up the issue), but the second-year quarterback is in fact dealing with fractured ribs according to head coach Brian Flores. Consider Tagovailoa week-to-week, with Jacoby Brissett set to start this Sunday against the Raiders.
