Join now >Cardinals players say David Johnson is extremely motivated heading into this season.
NFL.com’s Jim Trotter wrote about Johnson’s return to the field after missing the last 15 games of last season with his wrist injury suffered in Week 1, and he got some insight on Johnson’s mindset heading into the year. Star cornerback Patrick Peterson said Johnson is “incredibly hungry. You can tell how much he wants it, and he looks better than he ever did before the injury,” while star receiver Larry Fitzgerald said people forgetting about Johnson is “bothering” the running back and also noted the motivation he sees—with some added motivation after missing a year, wanting another contract, and wanting people to respect him as an elite player. DJ himself told Trotter he feels like people “seem to have forgotten about me” and expects to be even better than in 2016 when he recorded 2,118 total yards and 20 total touchdowns. In fantasy football, Johnson is also seemingly not getting the respect he probably deserves, with most people saying it should be between Todd Gurley and Le’Veon Bell for the first overall pick in drafts; we undoubtedly think Johnson belongs in the discussion at the very least.

Ben Roethlisberger has cleared concussion protocol.
Roethlisberger is not playing in the Steelers’ second preseason game, which had been the plan anyway, but it’s good to hear he’s out of the protocol and probably feeling better after he landed on his head during practice earlier in the week. Big Ben should get some action in Pittsburgh’s third preseason game next week as he gears up for Week 1 against the Browns.

The Texans have waived quarterback Stephen Morris.
Morris joined the Texans when he was claimed off waivers in May, but he didn’t appear in last week’s preseason game and has now been let go. The 26-year-old (at the end of the month) could be signed as someone’s third quarterback before the season, but his odds of making a 53-man roster aren’t very high. Houston now has just Brandon Weeden and Joe Webb behind Deshaun Watson.

Griff Whalen is pushing for the starting slot job for the Raiders.
With Seth Roberts missing recent recent practices and Martavis Bryant missing a couple of practices with headaches, Whalen has taken advantage of more reps in the slot. Jon Gruden says “Whalen has stepped up. He earned that right. He’s doing some great things,” and he called the slot position “very competitive.” Amari Cooper and Jordy Nelson are locked into the top two receiver spots for the Raiders, but with Roberts, Bryant, Whalen, and Ryan Switzer, there are a few options for the primary third receiver spot.

Nelson Agholor has missed the last few practices with a lower body injury.
Teams are not obligated to give details on injuries during this time of year, but the fourth-year receiver is dealing with some type of lower body injury and will not play in tomorrow’s preseason game versus the Patriots. Agholor, who has had an excellent mindset since stepping into the league as a rookie from USC in 2015, says that “it’s time for me to get better again” after making a third-year jump last season. There might be a slight concern for Agholor’s Week 1 status considering we are not 100% sure about the injury he’s dealing with, but we expect he’ll be ready to go well before September 6 against the Falcons.

C.J. Prosise (hip) returned to practice today.
After missing a few practices with a hip flexor issue, Prosise returned to practice and is expected to play in this Saturday’s preseason game versus the Chargers. With Rashaad Penny (finger) out, Prosise has a chance to take advantage and potentially carve out a solid role on third downs. Prosise must stay healthy as he battles for a roster spot in Seattle.

Carlos Henderson has been suspended one game for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
Henderson has been away from the team all training camp, failing to report after Denver drafted Courtland Sutton in the second round and DaeSean Hamilton in the third round. The 2017 third-round pick is way off the fantasy radar, and the Broncos might just cut him loose at some point.
