Join now >Josh Doctson is being evaluated for a shoulder injury.
The Redskins say they will share an update on Docton’s status tomorrow, so we’re unsure of the extent of the injury, but it could be serious. Doctson dealt with a shoulder injury last season, but he didn’t miss any games because of it. Hopefully it’s not too serious, but we’ll learn more tomorrow after Doctson undergoes tests.

Jordan Matthews’ hamstring injury is deemed to be significant, according to Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport says that Matthews being out is the reason for New England having continued interest in free agent Eric Decker. The Patriots already had a loaded group of wide receivers on the depth chart, so if nothing else, Matthews being out for an extended period of time could put his roster spot in serious jeopardy. In the mean time, the team has been giving Phillip Dorsett more work in the slot, and the former first-round pick could have a bigger-than-expected role if he impresses over the next few weeks. Cordarrelle Patterson should also benefit from more reps.

The Panthers have activated wide receiver Curtis Samuel.
Samuel was doing some things on a limited basis as the Panthers took things slow to start camp, but he should now be at least close to a full participant in practice with his teammates. The second-year receiver is attempting to carve out a role as a starter on Carolina’s offense. The Panthers would probably like the top three receivers to be Devin Funchess, D.J. Moore, and Samuel, but it’s no lock and Samuel will have to earn his role. He’s someone to watch closely this preseason.

Joe Mixon has been the “clear No. 1 bell cow” for the Bengals in training camp.
There was some slight concern about Giovani Bernard potentially taking on a bigger role running the ball this year, but it sounds like Mixon is locked in as Cincinnati’s clear lead runner with Jeremy Hill now gone. Mixon says he’s a big fan of the new way the offensive line is blocking up front, allowing him and the other running backs to get up the field. Bengals running backs coach Kyle Caskey says Mixon is “a very disciplined runner right now and a very disciplined student. He’s grown up… He’s really taken ownership of where he’s at on the team at this point.” In better shape (down 12 pounds from last season to 218) with a better offensive line in front of him and in a potential workhorse role, Mixon is a big-time breakout candidate in 2018.

The Cowboys placed wide receiver Cedrick Wilson (shoulder) on injured reserve.
The rookie sixth-round pick’s injured shoulder in practice a few days ago unfortunately looks like it’ll end his season, as it’s very unlikely he returns in 2018. Wilson might be headed for surgery, but either way he should be 100% for the start of offseason training or training camp next year.

The Saints have signed wide receiver Michael Floyd, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Floyd spent last season with the Vikings, catching ten passes for 78 yards in 11 games. Entering his seventh NFL season, Floyd is still only 28 years old (29 in November), and he averages 15.1 yards per reception in his career. It’s been a handful of years since Floyd’s 65-reception, 1,041-yard, five-touchdown season with the Cardinals in 2013, but the former first-round pick should be able to help a team. He’ll compete for a reserve role this summer.

Jon Gruden says he likes Marcell Ateman.
Gruden is generally a very positive person and likes a lot of players, but he sounds genuinely intrigued by Ateman: “I like Ateman. Ateman makes plays every day.” Gruden went on to say that quarterback Derek Carr called an audible on one play and gave the rookie receiver an opportunity to win a one-on-one situation—which he did. We thought Ateman should have been drafted a lot higher than the seventh round, but the Raiders might have gotten a gem. Ateman might not make a huge impact in 2018 if Amari Cooper, Jordy Nelson, and Martavis Bryant all stay healthy (and in Bryant’s case, unsuspended), but he’s at least an intriguing dynasty-league option right now.
