Join now >The Saints are re-signing Ty Montgomery.
Montgomery is a very good fit as a reserve running back in Sean Payton’s offense, so he’s being locked up ahead of free agency. The versatile former receiver can probably be used more in 2021, but we’ll see if Payton gets him more involved.

The 49ers signed Ross Dwelley to a one-year extension.
Dwelley was set to become a restricted free agent at the start of the new league year, but the Niners got a deal with him now. Dwelley will continue to contribute behind George Kittle at tight end for San Francisco.

Washington has officially released Alex Smith.
This was the expectation despite the veteran going 5-1 as the starter last year after a miraculous return to the field, and Smith is said to still want to play in 2021. The strong crop of rookies passers (five signal-callers could realistically go in the top ten picks) could make it difficult for the 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year to find a clear starting job, but he should at least get a shot somewhere. With a 80-36-1 record since 2011, Smith is simply a winner that numerous teams should be checking into this month.

Anthony Sherman has retired from the NFL.
Sherman had a very good run in the NFL, lasting ten years as a fullback (including the past eight seasons with the Chiefs). Sherman’s career ends with 28 carries for 73 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown along with 66 receptions for 552 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns. Sherman won a championship with the Chiefs when they beat the Niners in Super Bowl LIV, so he had a very good decade run in the league. Judging from his retirement announcement video, it appears Sherman will join HSI as a deputy sheriff, so it’s good to see he has something lined up and we wish him the best of luck moving forward.

The Seahawks have released Josh Gordon.
This was expected after Gordon recently signed with the FCFL. The former All-Pro wideout remains indefinitely suspended by the NFL, but hopefully he can get his personal life in order while having some fun catching passes from Johnny Manziel.

The Steelers have officially signed Ben Roethlisberger to a new contract for 2021.
This has been expected, and now it’s official, with Big Ben entering his 18th NFL season. Roethlisberger had hinted at retirement in the past, but it’s interesting that he’ll still be playing with 2004 draft class mates Eli Manning and Philip Rivers both now retired. The restructured deal for Roethlisberger brings down his massive cap number as the Steelers look to retain players like Bud Dupree and JuJu Smith-Schuster during free agency.

The Giants released Golden Tate.
Tate spent two seasons with the Giants, and it’s not surprise that the team is going in another direction, as they might be looking for more of an outside presence at wideout this offseason. Tate will turn 33 this summer, but he should be able to find a new team without much issue.
