Joe Williams | Free Agent RB

The 49ers are waiving running back Joe Williams.

The 2017 fourth-round pick was a favorite of head coach Kyle Shanahan’s, but the Niners are deep at running back and are moving on. Williams could be a practice squad candidate if no one else picks him up.

Joe Williams (ribs) is out until at least Week 1.

Williams is dealing with a rib fracture, so he's out for the rest of the preseason. Unfortunately, this might be enough that the second-year back, who was a favorite of head coach Kyle Shanahan's during the 2017 draft, is pushed out of the mix on the 53-man roster. Williams hasn't been able to take advantage of Jerick McKinnon and Matt Breida both being out with injuries.

Joe Williams (ankle) is being placed on IR, according to Tom Pelissero.

The 49ers' fourth-round pick looked to fall out of favor as the preseason progressed, and it turns out this will amount to a redshirt year for him. Carlos Hyde is locked-in as the workhorse back in Kyle Shanahan's offense for 2017, but Williams remains a hold in dynasty leagues as the potential guy in the future. Remember, Shanahan pushed hard for John Lynch to draft Williams after Lynch had him off his board.

Joe Williams rushed ten times for 53 yards in the team's preseason finale.

Williams also lost a fumble, and ball security has been an issue for the rookie. Talks of Williams unseating Carlos Hyde all offseason clearly never happened, and it was never expected to happen. Hyde is locked-in as the starter, and Williams doesn't even look like the second-string back. While he's a name to monitor in redraft leagues, he should remain on the waiver wire to start the season.

Joe Williams struggles to do much in 49ers' third preseason game.

The rookie running back from Utah had seven carries for 16 yards in the exhibition versus Minnesota. The 49ers averaged only 3.5 yards per carry in the game, so Williams wasn't alone. He also had an 11-yard reception on his only target. Williams could end up being the primary backup behind Carlos Hyde this season, but he's probably not there yet.

Rookie running back Joe Williams flashes in preseason game against the Chiefs.

The rookie from Utah looked really good in his first NFL preseason action, carrying seven times for 60 yards. He did drop a toss, but quickly picked it up and was able to pick up about ten yards on the play. Carlos Hyde only got two early carries and appears locked in as the starter, but Williams will probably push for playing time if he keeps it up.

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco believes rookie running back Joe Williams could be the Niners' lead back this season.

The love head coach Kyle Shanahan had for Joe Williams was well-documented by MMQB's Peter King when he sat in on the 49ers' draft. Maiocco says 49ers running back coach Bobby Turner also remained in touch with Williams throughout the draft process, despite the fact that GM John Lynch had him off the team's draft board because he quit (then returned) at Utah last season. It's clear the Niners coaches are very high on Williams. As a hand-picked back by the new regime, Williams might actually start over Carlos Hyde this season, or at least steal a good amount of carries.

Kyle Shanahan really wanted Utah running back Joe Williams in the draft, as Peter King reports in The MMQB.

Peter King gave a great inside look at the 49ers draft room, which can be read in the link below. Joe Williams was off the 49ers draft board because he quit Utah during the season (and eventually returned to have a very strong finish to his career), but Kyle Shanahan wanted Williams and would have been "sick" if they didn't get him. GM John Lynch, who runs the draft for the Niners, called Williams Saturday morning, and Williams explained to Lynch that he faced depression and didn't feel like he could help the team; once Williams got his mind right, he returned to the team and gained 1,332 yards in seven games without being in shape when he returned. With the head coach Kyle Shanahan already a huge fan, Williams has the potential to be the next great back in a Shanahan offense. Keep an eye on Williams, even this season as a rookie.

The 49ers select Utah RB Joe Williams with the 121st pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Moments after trading for Kapri Bibbs from Denver, the Niners add another back in Williams, and now have Tim Hightower, Bibbs, and Williams behind Carlos Hyde. Williams left Utah this season because of family issues, but performed when when he returned. He has some nice upside because of his explosiveness, as evidenced by his 4.41 40-yard dash and 35-inch vertical jump, and with Hyde and Hightower not very durable, it isn't out of the question that he becomes a fantasy factory as a rookie.
