WOLF SPORTS PROJECTION

Tim Hightower | Free Agent RB

Tim Hightower has been released by the 49ers.

After a very good season last year in New Orleans, Hightower signed with the Niners and many thought he would get a lot of work in the backfield. However, he didn't make the final cut and will be looking for a new team. Because the Saints have a stacked backfield, that's unlikely to be a match; there will certainly be teams interested in Hightower however, and he could sign with a team over the weekend.

Tim Hightower scores in 49ers' final preseason game.

The veteran running back had eight carries for 21 yards and a touchdown and two receptions for four yards. He's vying to be Carlos Hyde's primary backup, but it's also possible he doesn't make the roster. He's probably safe, but it won't be for sure until the 49ers make their cuts by the 4:00 PM ET deadline on Saturday.

49ers GM John Lynch announced on Twitter that the team signed Tim Hightower.

Hightower leaves New Orleans for the rebuilding Niners, and should slide right in as Carlos Hyde's backup. He turns 31 in May, but Hightower showed he still has juice left after a nice 2016 season. Hightower will probably handle 8-10 touches a game behind Hyde. This is better news for Mark Ingram than anyone else, though the Saints have been linked to Joe Mixon.

Free agent running back Tim Hightower is visiting the Redskins, according to Mike Triplett.

Hightower played with the Redskins in 2011—his final season before taking a three season hiatus because of a torn ACL with Washington. He spent the last two seasons as Mark Ingram's backup, handling a good amount of touches, at times. Triplett reports that Hightower has not ruled out returning to the Saints.

Hightower scores in season finale.

He had three carries for 29 yards and a touchdown agains the Falcons. Hightower finishes the season with 133 carries for 548 yards and four touchdowns rushing, with 22 receptions for 200 yards and one receiving touchdown. Hightower should be back with the Saints next season as Mark Ingram's backup and change of pace back, but we would expect Ingram (5.1 YPC this season) might get more carries than he did this year.

Tim Hightower get eight carries for 29 yards against Tampa Bay.

Hightower is a risky fantasy play now in a crowded backfield with Ingram being the lead guy.

Tim Hightower | Free Agent RB

Tim Hightower steals two touchdowns in win.

Hightower rushed 11 times for 37 yards and scored twice near the goal line as the Saints topped the Cardinals in a shootout. He also caught three passes for 11 yards. Mark Ingram has looked like one of the best backs in the league, but Hightower continues to get meaningful carries despite averaging 1.1 fewer yards per carry. Hightower will be a volatile FLEX option for Week 16 against Tampa Bay.

Hightower leads Saints in rushing on Sunday.

He rushed six times for 31 yards, adding an eight-yard catch. With Mark Ingram no longer seeing a big workload for whatever reason, Hightower was efficient with limited touches on Sunday. Still, he's not a fantasy option next week in Arizona.

Tim Hightower sees three touches in loss.

The Saints were down early, but despite the deficit not being big at all, decided to completely go away from the running game. Hightower rushed twice for five yards and caught one pass for four yards. Mark Ingram was clearly a lot more effective yet again, and saw 12 touches in the loss. Ingram briefly left the game after he tweaked his toe injury, so Hightower's Week 14 value will be dependent on Ingram's status.

Tim Hightower catches 50-yard touchdown...from Willie Snead.

Hightower had 15 carries for 51 yards and two catches for 54 yards against the Rams. The touchdown came on a trick play that had Willie Snead throw a bomb to a wide open Hightower. As long as the Saints keep Hightower involved he's a solid FLEX option. He can be in your lineup next week in a potential shootout against Detroit.

Tim Hightower picks up good yardage after Ingram (concussion) leaves in 3rd quarter.

Hightower rushed 12 times for 69 yards and added eight catches for 57 yards. Playing clearly behind Mark Ingram early, the veteran back got a lot of touches after Ingram was concussed. He made some nice moves, including side-stepping Luke Kuechly, but mostly got what was blocked for him, including a 27-yard run where he was untouched. Ingram was looking good before he left the game, and will resume lead back duties if he plays in Week 12. If not, Hightower will be a solid RB2 against the Rams.

Tim Hightower ineffective as Saints fall to Broncos.

Hightower rushed eight times for 21 yards, adding two catches for 34 yards. Mark Ingram was the starter after being benched against the Seahawks two weeks ago and coming off the bench last week, and clearly outplayed Hightower. Still, the Saints insisted on a near-even split, and it may have cost them. In a key divisional game on a short week, New Orleans would be smart to feed a fresh Ingram. Hightower should stay on the bench for Week 11.
