Super Bowl LIV will be in 4K for the first time, so many of you might suddenly be in the market for a 4K television. There are a variety of options from a number of different companies, but these are a handful of the top picks to purchase before the Super Bowl on February 2.
The best all-around quality aside from the ultra-high-end units (mostly from LG, like the Z9 88-inch 8K OLED TV), the LG OLED C9 will blow friends away. As is the case with many televisions out of the box today, just be sure you do not have the “soap opera effect” (called TruMotion on the LG televisions) toggled on—while it is supposed to make fast-paced sports look better, the picture looks more natural with TruMotion off.
You might have heard on here before that Sony positions itself as the premium of premium when it comes to televisions, and that’s what they do with the A9G MASTER Series. The picture quality is outstanding, and maybe you want to match Sony products with a receiver or a PlayStation 4. Like the LG OLED C9, the A9G will “wow” guests watching the Big Game. Keep in mind that LG makes the panels for Sony’s OLEDs, but Sony uses its own processing, which some argue is superior.
Samsung QLEDs are able to deliver eye-catching lights and colors, and it’s been acclaimed for its usage to play video games or watch sports—they even partnered with ESPN to help bring 4K college football games to viewers. The Q60 is one of the best values you’ll find, and it will do just fine for watching the Super Bowl—but you might want to take a look at OLEDs for a better overall experience with movies and shows. If you want a Samsung QLED in the higher-end range instead of an OLED for whatever reason, you can take a step up to the Samsung Q90.
Vizio has been known as one of the top values in television for a while now, delivering excellent color and brightness. The P-Series is a safe option to watch Super Bowl LIV and other events moving forward, especially if you are hesitant to drop a good amount of money on an OLED because of concerns about burn-in. OLED’s burn-in issues are overblown and appear to be very rare, but Vizio’s P-Series offers no such problem.
TCL is widely considered the best value available for televisions, but it is a partially state-owned Chinese company that has had some issues with build quality compared to premium television models. Basically, you get what you pay for with the TCL units. The picture quality might not totally blow away any guests, but it’ll offer a solid picture along with Roku features giving it a boost for cord cutters. Not many will argue the quality is superior, but TCLs are fan favorites among some people.
