Join now >Michael Thomas (ankle) is expected to begin the season on the PUP list.
This was expected, and it officially keeps Thomas out for the first six weeks (five games for the Saints) of the season. Thomas is out for an unknown period of time, but perhaps he’ll be ready to go when first eligible to return to action in Week 7.

The Packers are waiving Equanimeous St. Brown.
Green Bay is very deep at receiver, so St. Brown will be in search of a new team after final cuts. Perhaps St. Brown will land with his brother Amon-Ra in Detroit, as the Lions might be in need of some size on the perimeter.

The Browns are signing Nick Mullens to their practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Mullens was recently released by the Eagles, but he will essentially be Cleveland’s No. 3 quarterback with Baker Mayfield and Case Keenum on the 53-man roster. The 26-year-old had previously thrown for 4,714 yards in 19 career games (16 starts) with the 49ers.

The Jets released Josh Johnson.
Johnson probably joined the Jets too late to have a good chance at making the final roster as a backup quarterback. But the veteran always seems to find a way to contribute to a team, and he should be picked up soon if he wants to continue his playing career.

The Patriots released Cam Newton.
First-round rookie Mac Jones really could not have played much better for the Patriots this preseason, running the New England offense with elite efficiency. But this is a stunning move to say the least. Newton himself also looked good in a full offseason with the Patriots, who added new weapons to the offense; the former league MVP looked more decisive and comfortable within the offense. Also, Newton dominated first-team reps during the preseason, and in the final preseason game it was Newton that played exclusively with the starters before Jones played with the second-stringers. Bill Belichick and the Patriots probably felt there was no reason to wait to play a quarterback that they are obviously very happy with in Jones. We thought there was a chance that the Patriots would keep Newton as a situational quarterback for in short-yardage situations and down by the goal line even if and when Jones got the nod as the team’s starter, but the Pats are all in with Jones. Again, we thought Newton looked good this preseason, and he appeared to have an exemplary mindset and attitude in New England; it’ll be interesting to see where the former Panther and Patriot lands.

The Bills are releasing Jacob Hollister, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
As noted by Pelissero, this news is a surprise, as the former college teammate of Josh Allen was thought to even have a shot at the No. 1 job if Dawson Knox slipped up. Instead, Buffalo is going in another direction, and this news puts Knox on more solid ground.

The Lions are releasing Geronimo Allison, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Allison wasn’t able to crack a wide-open Detroit receiving corps, but he is still just 27 and should be able to get a shot elsewhere. Tyrell Williams, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Khalif Raymond are the projected starters for the Lions.
