Join now >Cam Newton is subject to the five-day entry process for COVID-19.
Due to a misunderstanding about COVID tests away from the team facility, Newton—who is unvaccinated—needs to be away from the club until Thursday. This is fortunately occurring before the regular season begins and will only lead to missed practice time for Newton, but it’s potentially the start of a very confusing (and perhaps nonsensical) year of COVID issues in the NFL. Titans head coach Mike Vrabel—who has been vaccinated—is currently away from his team, too, and there will surely be players/coaches that miss time in the regular season. Fantasy commissioners should consider expanding roster/IR spots for 2021.

Carson Wentz has officially returned to Colts practice.
Things have apparently been going very positively for Wentz since his foot surgery earlier this month, and he’ll now have just under three weeks to work his way up to full-go for Week 1. Wentz has been participating in walk-throughs and is clearly motivated to be out there for the opening game for his new team. Probably the only thing that would stop Wentz from playing in Week 1 is if the team doctors and coaches hold him out for his own good if he’s not at 100% and is at risk of re-injury, but it sure seems like Wentz will be on the field to start the season.

A.J. Brown is dealing with a knee injury but expected to be ready for Week 1, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Brown has missed practice time in camp, but hopefully it’s more of a precaution than anything else. That said, this news is still notable with the star receiver injuring both knees last season. If nothing else, perhaps Brown’s stock will dip some for him to be a great value in the third round of fantasy drafts, and it’s worth noting that he’s one of the game’s toughest players.

Washington released Steven Sims.
This is somewhat of a surprising release after Sims contributed and flashed for two seasons with Washington after going undrafted in 2019. However, the Football Team is deep at receiver and is going in another direction. It shouldn’t take long for Sims to find another landing spot.

The Bears are signing Isaiah Coulter, according to multiple reports.
As expected, it didn’t take long for Coulter to find a new team after the Texans cut him. The second-year receiver is an intriguing potential addition to Matt Nagy’s offense and should have a shot to make the roster despite joining the team this late in the summer.

Trey Sermon is dealing with an ankle injury.
It’s disappointing that we won’t see the rookie running back play in this evening’s preseason game against the Chargers, but hopefully he’s just being held out as more of a precaution than anything. We’ll see if 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan gives more info on the extent of Sermon’s ankle issue after the game.

A.J. McCarron suffered a torn ACL.
This was the fear and expectation after McCarron was injured during last night’s preseason game, and unfortunately the MRI confirmed the injury today. McCarron’s season is over, and the Falcons will almost certainly be in search of another veteran quarterback to bring in behind Matt Ryan. However, undrafted rookie Feleipe Franks has dual threat ability and played in 36 games during his college career at Florida and Arkansas. Perhaps Georgia product Jake Fromm of the Bills will be a trade target in the next couple of weeks. McCarron should be 100% for next season, and hopefully he’s feeling better soon after a very disappointing injury.
