[UPDATE: Smith is currently remaining in the game for Washington.] We expect Allen will be back in there for Ales Smith when Washington gets the ball back in the second half, but it was still great to see Smith in there and looking healthy in his first action since the career-altering leg injury in 2018.

Deebo Samuel (illness) is officially active for the 49ers.
Samuel passed all the necessary protocols despite a non-COVID illness, and he’s active against the Niners after missing the last two days of practice this week with the illness. After missing practice time, Deebo is more of a risky FLEX option; but the second-year receiver could get more work as San Francisco continues to work him in for his second game this season.

Raheem Mostert (knee) is officially active for Week 5.
Mostert was able to practice all week on a limited basis, so this was the hope entering today. Jerick McKinnon has received a good amount of playing time with Mostert out, but Mostert is expected to lead this committee backfield.

Sammy Watkins leaves game with apparent hamstring injury.
Watkins appeared to garb his hamstring and was in serious discomfort while hopping over to the bench, so it looks like his afternoon is over. Before leaving, Watkins caught two passes for 24 yards and a touchdown. Hopefully this isn’t as bad as it looks, but Watkins could be facing a multi-week absence, as we’ve seen with hamstring issues around the league this year.

Kyle Allen heads to the locker room.
Allen took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey, so it appears he’s being checked out for a head injury. Veteran quarterback Alex Smith is on the field for the first time since his devastating 2018 leg injury, so this has been quite the comeback and story for Smith to get back after going through a lot over the past couple of years. We’ll update you as more information becomes available on Allen’s status.

Kyle Allen leaves game after hit to the head.
Allen was hit on a personal foul, so Alex Smith is in at quarterback to complete his remarkable comeback after a horrific leg injury suffered in 2018. Hopefully Allen ends up being OK and is able to return.

Diontae Johnson (back) questionable.
Johnson was shaken up on a punt return a bit ago, and Pittsburgh is now officially calling him questionable to return. The Steelers are fortunate to be very deep at receiver.
