Join now >The Panthers placed running back Fozzy Whittaker (knee) on injured reserve.
Unfortunately, Whittaker suffered a torn ACL on a non-contact, on-field drill in Monday’s training session. Last season, Whittaker wasn’t a big part of the offense but he provided good depth. Whittaker does appear to be in good spirits, at least, as he posted on Instagram a guarantee that he will be back on the field. We wish him luck in his recovery and look forward to seeing him in 2019.

The Giants have waived running back Paul Perkins.
A fifth-round pick out of UCLA in 2016, Perkins was waived with a non-football injury after he underwent surgery for a pectoral injury suffered before the team’s offseason conditioning programs began. It’s a significant fall for a guy that many claimed as a breakout candidate when he opened the 2017 season as the starter for New York, but the high expectations were probably unfair to begin with, and he rushed for just 90 yards on 41 carries last year. Now, Perkins will focus on getting healthy and earning a backup role somewhere. He is assured of another opportunity at just 23 years old, but Perkins is unlikely to turn into a fantasy contributor in 2018.

The Lions have waived running back Tion Green.
Last season, Green rushed 42 times for 165 yards and two scores as an undrafted rookie, but Detroit really has a loaded running back room with free-agent signing LeGarrette Blount and second-round pick Kerryon Johnson both added to the mix, so they didn’t have room for the 24-year-old anymore. Green should be able to get another shot to earn a roster spot as a backup in training camp with another team. He can be ignored in dynasty leagues.

Jay Gruden says Derrius Guice’s role is “quite easy to see.”
Guice didn’t catch the football much at LSU (32 receptions in three seasons), but he has shown the ability to catch the football. And the rookie running back says he knows he can be an all-around player that’s a weapon in the passing game and as a pass blocker. However, Gruden noted that Guice needs to improve some in pass protection and that “he’s more of a first-, and second-down banger.” Gruden then added that while he can catch, “our role for him is quite easy to see. It’s first, second down.” It sounds like Guice might be inserted into a big early-down-role right away for the Redskins, with the explosive Chris Thompson handling third downs. Samaje Perine and Rob Kelley are still in the mix, but there’s a chance Guice gets a ton of carries on first and second down as a rookie. Washington’s running back situation will be one to monitor throughout the preseason.

The Cardinals have signed fullback Derrick Coleman, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The former Seahawks and Falcons running back is headed to The Desert and will help pave the way for David Johnson. From a fantasy perspective, this is great news for Johnson, as Coleman is one of the better blocking fullbacks in the NFL. Coleman is actually deaf, so he’ll have to get used to reading the lips of Sam Bradford in the huddle and at the line of scrimmage, but he shouldn’t have much trouble with it.

Orleans Darkwa had minor leg surgery this morning, according to Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport says it was recommended by his doctor. It was a procedure which removed the plate in his leg he had inserted last offseason. Having the plate removed should help Darkwa, and considering he had career-highs across the board in 2017, teams’ interest in him could pick up soon. Rapoport notes Darkwa has had “several offers” so far. It’s also worth noting that players that sign starting today do not count against a team’s compensatory pick formula.

The Eagles are signing running back Matt Jones, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Philadelphia reportedly had three running backs, including former Raven Terrance West, work out for the team yesterday. The Eagles apparently like what they saw from Jones, and he’ll now join a backfield that already includes Jay Ajayi, Corey Clement, Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood, and Donnel Pumphrey. The former second-round pick Jones has a lot of ability and is different than the rest of the group at 6’2″, so he shouldn’t be counted out to potentially make the squad. However, Jones isn’t a recommended fantasy option quite yet. Jones was a 2015 third-round pick of the Redskins and spent the first two years of his career with them before spending parts of last season with the Colts.
