Join now >Patrick Mahomes II will start for the Chiefs in 2018.
Kansas City has agreed to trade Alex Smith to Washington, so they are handing the keys to the car off to the talented gunslinger from Texas Tech after one season sitting behind the veteran Smith. Obviously, Mahomes has an upside that’s through the roof—both in real life and fantasy. There could be some growing pains, of course, but Mahomes, who has the ability to pick up yardage on the ground in addition to his passing prowess, will have QB1 upside next season. Mahomes will be one of the better quarterback targets late in fantasy drafts this summer, especially if the Chiefs add more help on offense.

Brice Butler is signing with the Cardinals, according to James Jones.
The former NFL receiver Jones breaks yet another free agent signing, and he says Butler’s deal with Arizona is a two-year deal. Ahead of free agency, Butler said he wanted to go somewhere that he would start, and he’ll have at least a good opportunity to become one of the top options behind Larry Fitzgerald for the Cardinals. Butler scored three touchdowns in 2017 and seemed to make plays whenever his number was called. He brings a major size/speed element to the Cardinals, and despite not hitting 22 receptions or 318 yards in his five seasons in Oakland and Dallas, Butler will have some upside if he has a large role for the Cardinals in 2018.

The Patriots are signing Brandon Bolden to a one-year deal, according to multiple reports.
Bolden has spend his entire six years in the NFL with New England, and he is a superb special teams player for them and fits the “Do Your Job” mantra of the Patriots. If the Pats call on him to chip in on offense, he’s shown the ability to do a great job there through the years, too. We’ll see how the running back position shakes out this offseason, but Bolden isn’t likely to be a fantasy asset in 2018 despite his real-life contributions to the team.

The Jets have claimed former Raiders tight end Clive Walford, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Walford was released by Oakland last week after three seasons with the team, but it’s not surprising that he was claimed on waivers. The former third-round pick is still just 26-years-old and has flashed when given the opportunity, and opportunity should be plentiful with the Jets. As the roster currently stands, Walford will likely compete with 2017 fifth-round pick Jordan Leggett for snaps on an offensive that needs skill-position players to step up. Of course, things could change via the draft or a trade, but this is a good landing spot for Walford’s dynasty outlook.

The Chiefs are trading Alex Smith to the Redskins, according to multiple reports.
Well it doesn’t get more shocking than this, as the current season has yet to conclude, but a blockbuster trade is set to occur when the new league year begins in March—and it’s been agreed to during the State of the Union Address, no less. The news was first reported by Terez Paylor of the The Kansas City Star. Kirk Cousins will clearly be playing elsewhere in 2018, and the Redskins arguably got an upgrade in Smith, who is a perfect fit in Jay Gruden’s offense. It won’t become official until the start of the league year, but the veteran Smith will be a huge difference-maker for Washington and the landscape of the NFC. While offensive coaches don’t get much better than Andy Reid, Jay Gruden is certainly one of the best offensive minds in the league. Right now, it’s difficult to get too excited about the receiving corps of the Redskins, but Smith is still a good bet to be a QB1 option in 2018.

Geno Smith is signing with the Chargers, according to Adam Schefter.
After spending his first four season with the Jets and last season with the Giants, Smith is moving across the country to backup Philip Rivers in Los Angeles. Smith, who played well in his lone start last season, is one of the better backup quarterbacks in the NFL. He’d be a consideration in deeper leagues if he was forced to play, but hopefully ironman Philip Rivers is able to remain on the field all year again.

The Jaguars have released Chris Ivory.
After Ivory was inactive in the playoffs, this was expected heading into the offseason. T.J. Yeldon came on strong toward the end of the season, and the Jags also have explosive running back Corey Grant in the backfield mix behind Leonard Fournette. This move gives Jacksonville over $3 million in cap space, and it’s possible they look to add another back to the mix in the draft or free agency. Ivory will be 30 next month, but he should generate interest as a solid backup that runs hard and is underrated as a receiver.
