The Patriots placed Dalton Keene on injured reserve.

[UPDATE: Keene had knee surgery and is expected to be ready for 2022.] Keene had been on the PUP list, but he’s been moved to injured reserve. The versatile tight end might ultimately be moved at some point after the Patriots aggressively added to the position this offseason by signing Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry.

The Cardinals signed Ito Smith.

The former Falcons running back lands in a good spot with a shot to win a roster spot in Kliff Kingsbury’s offense. Given the state of the Arizona backfield, Smith will almost certainly have to force his way into the Cardinals keeping four running backs on the 53-man roster to make the team.

Cody Hollister (ankle) has been placed on injured reserve.

Hollister suffered a high-ankle sprain at practice, and he could eventually be released with an injury settlement to get a shot elsewhere. The 27-year-old has caught three passes over the past two seasons in Tennessee.

Justin Jefferson is dealing with a sprained AC joint, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Jefferson went down hard on a rep and was helped by several trainers before heading inside, so it’s good to hear it’s “nothing serious”—though the second-year wideout will undergo more testing. If nothing else, this news could end any chance Minnesota would risk playing Jefferson in preseason action.

Kyle Shanahan says Trey Lance “is going to play for us this season.”

While Lance is said to be off to an excellent start to his first NFL training camp, the veteran Jimmy Garoppolo (also having a strong camp) is fully expected to be the Week 1 starters for the Niners. Still, Lance has been working on zone-read plays and designed quarterback runs this summer, and it sounds like that’s something Shanahan will use even if Lance is not the starter. At the very least, expect the exciting rookie quarterback to see game action in situational packages this season. Jimmy G has some exciting fantasy upside of his own given the weapons in the San Francisco offense and the fact that he’ll be determined (sort of like an Alex Smith 2017 situation with the Chiefs), but Lance seeing time will limit that a bit.

The Jaguars are signing Tavon Austin.

It’s not surprising that Urban Meyer is interested in bringing in a dynamic talent like Austin. The veteran receiver/returner will look to make an impact this preseason and win a spot on the final roster for the Jags.

Lamar Jackson has been activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Jackson missed several days while on the COVID list, so it’s good to see him back. Hopefully the former league MVP  is able to stay available this season.
