Jason Witten is retiring from the NFL.

Witten is calling it a career after 17 seasons, which of course included a previous retirement when he joined the Monday Night Football booth. Turning 39 in the spring, Witten spent his first 16 years in Dallas while setting numerous franchise records, and then finished out his career with the Raiders. For his career, Witten caught 1,228 passes for 13,046 yards and 74 touchdowns—with the receptions and yards ranking second all-time among tight ends behind Tony Gonzalez. The long-time Cowboy great will almost certainly be a first-ballot Hall of Fame selection, and he should have a very successful post-playing career. Coaching could be an option for Witten.

The 49ers signed Jeff Wilson Jr. to a one-year deal.

Wilson could only become a restricted free agent this offseason, so it’s not surprising that he’s just re-signing with the Niners now after a very strong end to his 2020 campaign. Wilson did an excellent job in the lead back role in Kyle Shanahan’s offense over the final few games of the year, and he ended the season with 126 carries for 600 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns along with 13 receptions for 133 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns in 12 games. Wilson figures to have a shot to lead San Francisco’s backfield next season.

Nick Mullens underwent elbow surgery in December, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

According to Garafolo, the injury wasn’t as bad as initially feared, and Mullens should be 100% for training camp. Based on all the potential quarterback movement this offseason, it’s entirely possible that San Francisco has an entirely new room in 2021.

Cole Beasley played through a broken fibula at the end of the year.

Beasley went down late in Week 16 and missed the regular season finale, but he somehow returned for the playoffs despite dealing with a broken leg. The veteran understandably not being himself impacted Buffalo’s offense—particularly in the AFC Championship Game—though this news puts Beasley at perhaps the top of the list in terms of toughest players in the NFL. Coming off an All-Pro season and entering another year in Brian Daboll’s system, Beasley should again be one of the league’s best slot receivers in 2021.

Martavis Bryant signed with the Toronto Argonauts.

The former Steelers and Raiders receiver has not played since 2018, and he remains suspended by the NFL. So for now at least, he’s headed north of the border to the CFL. Bryant is 29 years old, so this may be his last shot to make an impact and catch the attention of NFL teams to go on to have a productive career.

Aaron Jones (chest) did not return for the Packers.

Jones was shown a couple of times on the bench after leaving, and he looked to be in considerable pain or discomfort on the sideline after leaving following a big hit to the midsection and a lost fumble early in the second half of the NFC title game loss to the Bucs. Before leaving, Jones had six carries for 27 yards and four receptions for seven yards. The explosive runner is now set to hit free agency, and the Packers figure to let him hit the open market given the presence of Jamaal Williams and 2020 second-round pick A.J. Dillon, but he’s a good fit in Green Bay. Jones has run for over 1,000 yards in each of the past two seasons, and he averages 5.2 yards per carry for his career.

Sammy Watkins (calf) is officially inactive for the AFC Championship.

Watkins is inching closer to a return, but he’s out against his former Bills team. This is a notable loss for the Chiefs, but hopefully they can get Watkins back for Super Bowl LV if they are able to win today.
