Rico Gathers scores again in preseason game against the Rams.

Gathers caught four passes for 47 yards and a touchdown, leading Dallas in catches, yards, and touchdowns. He’s certainly making the most of his opportunity this month, and the former college basketball player looks like a legitimate receiving threat for Dallas. Gathers will struggle for fantasy production with Jason Witten ahead of him, but he should make some plays in the regular season.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott says he has “all the confidence in the world” in Tyrod Taylor.

Taylor struggled in last night’s preseason game against the Eagles, throwing two interceptions. McDermott added, “There’s no doubt that we have to move the ball better as the offense evolves.” As McDermott says, the entire offense needs to get better—it’s not all on Tyrod Taylor, who has played very well in his two seasons as the Bills starting quarterback. Taylor will almost certainly be starting when the regular season opens, but if the Bills struggle, fifth-round rookie Nathan Peterman will likely make starts.

Kenny Stills gets targeted once in second Dolphins preseason game.

Stills caught the target for six yards. The concern for Still’s fantasy value is Cutler’s evident affinity for throwing to DeVante Parker. Stills will be one of Miami’s top three receivers, but he might not approach the nine touchdowns he scored last season if Parker is improved and if new tight end Julius Thomas takes some targets. Stills is still worth a pick late in fantasy drafts as a boom/bust weekly option, though.

Bryce Petty doesn’t get much time in Jets’ preseason opener.

Petty entered the game after Josh McCown and Christian Hackenberg and was 2/6 for 16 yards, along with two carries for eight yards. The third-year quarterback made starts during the regular season last year, and Hackenberg will be first up to make starts if the Jets decide to bench the starter McCown for whatever reason during the season.

Bucs QB Ryan Griffin is out multiple weeks with a shoulder injury.

Head coach Dirk Koetter said Griffin has a sprain in his AC joint. Griffin was competing for the backup job behind Jameis Winston and this is a tough break for him. We should get an inside look at Griffin’s reaction to being out for several weeks on this Tuesday’s episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks”. Tampa Bay will probably look for another quarterback to bring in to help with numbers in practice.

Byron Marshall rushed six times for 21 yards and one touchdown in Thursday night’s preseason game.

He also caught two passes for 15 yards. Marshall was behind both Corey Clement and Donnel Pumphrey in the Eagles backfield, so his roster chances look very slim in a crowded room. Still just 23, Marshall has shown enough that he could be a practice squad candidate again, whether that’s for the Eagles or someone else.

Anquan Boldin looks sluggish in preseason debut with Bills.

The 36-year-old caught one pass for five yards. It was his first game action of the year, but Boldin was stumbling at least twice as he ran routes, including on a Tyrod Taylor interception. It’s fair to wonder how much more the veteran has in the tank, as he will turn 37 in October. We’ll see if some of the rust is knocked off next week against his former team in the Ravens.
