Join now >Rick Spofford of Packers.com believes Ty Montgomery will sit the second preseason game.
Green Bay’s starting running back hasn’t practiced the last two days because of a “lower leg injury.” Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said the injury is something Montgomery is “working through,” and Montgomery himself told reporters he isn’t worried about it. Spofford believes given the history and this being a preseason game, there’s reason to believe Montgomery won’t be playing this Saturday in Week 2 of the preseason. Remember: Jordy Nelson tore his ACL during a preseason game two seasons ago. The Packers aren’t going to put key players out there during the preseason if they aren’t 100%.

Rookie fullback McCloskey scores in his first preseason game.
The Niners rookie had two receptions for nine yards, including a touchdown from two-yards out. It was actually McCloskey’s birthday, so it’s great to see him score a touchdown in his first NFL game on his birthday. Kyle Juszczyk is is locked in as the clear starter at fullback, but McCloskey is a definite practice squad candidate if he doesn’t make the roster as a special teamer.

Laquon Treadwell is expected to practice today.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network says Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer told him the second-year receiver plans to practice today. Treadwell has missed a couple of weeks of practice with a leg injury; but, by all accounts, he was having a great training camp before he was injured. Look for the 2016 first-round pick to work his way back as one of the top three receivers on the Vikings. It’d be great if he could play in the team’s second preseason game on Friday night against the Seahawks.

Jeremy McNichols rushed twice for 12 yards in his preseason NFL debut last night.
The rookie has good receiving skills, but he did not record a reception. McNichols was drafted in the fifth round, so he probably needs to make some plays this preseason to solidify his roster spot. He, Charles Sims, and Peyton Barber are likely fighting for one or two roles behind Doug Martin and Jacquizz Rodgers.

Brock Osweiler will start the Browns second preseason game.
It’ll be the second straight start for Osweiler when he takes the field on Monday night against the Giants, and he appears to be in great position to be the starter. Rookie DeShone Kizer will enter the game second, and second-year quarterback Cody Kessler will enter the game third. Considering there have been indications (including most recently by left tackle Joe Thomas) that Kizer isn’t ready to start, Osweiler might be able to lock up the starting job with a good performance, as Kessler is entering the game third. It’s surprising Kessler hasn’t gotten more of an opportunity with the starters in preseason games after he played very well as a rookie in a bad situation last season. The game will be on national television, so people will get to watch Osweiler, Kizer, and Kessler for themselves.

Marquise Goodwin catches one pass for 14 yards in Niners preseason debut.
The free agent acquisition started the game and also played a short amount with Matt Barkley at quarterback. Goodwin will start opposite Pierre Garçon this season, and he has some sleeper fantasy value. He plays Denver next week in the 49ers’ second preseason game.

Patrick Mahomes II has taken over the backup quarterback job for the Chiefs.
It was only a matter of time, as the talented rookie played well in the opening preseason game and is coming along nicely for Kansas City. Alex Smith should not feel the heat, as he’s played great, winning football for several seasons now. The Chiefs are not going to bench him for Mahomes outright this season unless he plays very bad and the team is losing games. Mahomes is just a strong option in dynasty leagues for now.
