Matt Jones | Free Agent RB

Redskins cut talented running back Matt Jones.

Jones was a 2015 third-round pick that was buried on the depth chart in Washington after he struggled with fumbles last season. The former Florida Gator requested a trade or release months ago, but the Redskins did not oblige. Now, Jones will be free to sign with any team tomorrow at noon Eastern time, and he should be among the players teams are most interested in. Just speculating, the Ravens could be a team interested in Jones. Former Redskins GM Scot McCloughan said he doesn’t think there’s any question Jones was the most talented guy in the backfield for the Redskins, and Jones will get the opportunity to prove himself with another team now.

Josh Johnson | Commanders QB

The Giants have waived quarterback Josh Johnson, according to Ian Rapoport.

This means Geno Smith has won the Giants’ backup quarterback job. Johnson shouldn’t take long to resurface as a backup on someone else’s roster.

Will Tye | Eagles TE

The Giants have waived tight end Will Tye, according to Jordan Raanan.

Raanan expects the tight end to be claimed by Sunday after catching 48 passes in 2016. We’ll see where Tye lands, but he isn’t expected to be a fantasy factor.

Joe Webb | Free Agent QB

The Panthers released quarterback Joe Webb.

Carolina also released Garrett Gilbert, so it appears they are only going with two quarterback: Cam Newton and Derek Anderson. Webb’s release is a bit of a surprise, considering it leaves the Panthers with two quarterbacks and because Webb can contribute on special teams. There’s no guarantee gets another opportunity with another team, but it’s possible he could be back with the Panthers if they need him.

Jeremy McNichols | Commanders RB

The Buccaneers have waived fifth-round pick Jeremy McNichols, according to Mike Garafolo.

Anyone who watches ‘Hard Knocks’ could probably see that the rookie didn’t have a great chance of making the roster, as he struggled both as a ball carrier and a pass blocker. McNichols will undoubtedly get another chance somewhere else, but he needs to do a better job picking up the mental side of the game. This probably means Peyton Barber made the team with Doug Martin suspended for the first three games of the season.

PJ Walker | Free Agent QB

The Colts have released Phillip Walker, according to Tom Pelissero.

Walker looked good early on in camp, but Stephen Morris performed better in the games and won the third quarterback job behind an injured Andrew Luck and Scott Tolzien. The 22-year-old Walker should—at worst—be signed to Indy’s practice squad, especially with Luck’s status, and could even get looks as a backup quarterback on another team’s 53-man roster.

Cobi Hamilton | Free Agent WR

The Steelers cut receiver Cobi Hamilton.

Hamilton got a good amount of playing time at times last season, and he averaged 13.8 yards per reception on 17 catches. Martavis Bryant’s return and the addition of rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster made it difficult for Hamilton, as the Steelers have one of the deepest receiving groups in the NFL. Hamilton is only 26 and will not have trouble finding another team to sign him.
