Join now >The Panthers are releasing Cam Newton today, according to multiple reports.
Carolina was apparently unable to find a suitor willing to acquire Newton in a trade, so they are releasing the 30-year-old quarterback as expected. Newton’s Panthers career ends with 29,041 passing yards, 182 passing touchdowns, 108 interceptions, 4,806 rushing yards, and 58 rushing touchdowns. Newton played nine seasons for the Panthers after getting drafted No. 1 overall in 2011, and he won league MVP in 2015 while also helping take Carolina to the Super Bowl that season. Newton is still relatively young for a quarterback, but he’s dealt with multiple injuries and is coming off a season that was essentially wiped out by a foot issue that could still be lingering. It’ll be interesting to see which teams look into signing Newton, who may have to settle for a backup role at this point.

Jordan Ta’amu is signing with the Chiefs.
Ta’amu played for the St. Louis Battlehawks in the XFL and was one of the top quarterbacks in the league. He lands in a strong spot with Andy Reid and company in Kansas City, as it’s a great spot to learn and develop. Ta’amu could potentially compete for the backup role behind Patrick Mahomes this season.

The Giants are signing Dion Lewis, according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson.
Lewis is familiar with new Giants head coach Joe Judge from their time in New England together, and the veteran running back will be a good presence for the Giants running back room. Lewis will likely help chip in on third downs, but it’s unlikely he becomes a strong fantasy option in 2020 with Saquon Barkley leading the Giants backfield.

The Panthers are trading for Kyle Allen.
This is a logical deal for both sides. Allen gives the Redskins someone they are familiar with to backup Dwayne Haskins, as Allen worked with Ron Rivera and Scott Turner in Carolina. Meanwhile, the Panthers had an overflow of quarterbacks after signing former XFL star P.J. Walker this morning. If Haskins is injured or happens to struggle in 2020, Washington would have someone they feel comfortable with inserting into the quarterback spot on offense.

The Panthers are signing P.J. Walker, according to multiple reports.
Walker starred for the Houston Roughnecks in the XFL and appeared to be running away with league MVP before the league shut down its season due to the coronavirus pandemic. Walker threw for 15 touchdowns compared to four interceptions in the XFL, showing off his all-around dual-threat skillset. The Temple product played for Panthers head coach Matt Rhule in college, so this is a natural fit. Walker will compete to backup Teddy Bridgewater this season, and we’d say he’s the early favorite for the job.

The Falcons are signing Laquon Treadwell, according to multiple reports.
Treadwell played four seasons with the Vikings after he was selected in the first round in 2016, catching 65 passes for 701 yards and two touchdowns. Despite some brief flashes, things just didn’t work out for Treadwell in Minnesota, but the Ole Miss product lands in a good spot as a potential third receiver behind Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley. The change in scenery could spark Treadwell, who turns just 25 years old this June, in the second act of his NFL career.

The Patriots are signing Brian Hoyer, according to The Boston Globe’s Jim McBride.
It felt like this was going to happen after Hoyer was released by the Colts yesterday, and it’ll be the veteran quarterback’s third stint with the Patriots. Jarrett Stidham is the early favorite to start at quarterback for New England in 2020, but Hoyer brings a steady hand that will be a good presence for Stidham to lean on.
