Join now >Vikings GM Rick Spielman says Dalvin Cook “has a chance to be pretty special this year.”
The Vikings are clearly planning to run the ball more under offensive coordinator Kevin Stefansky with Gary Kubiak advising the unit, and this is just further confirmation that Cook will be a huge part of the offense. Minnesota is planning to use a lot more play-action passing in 2019, which plays to quarterback Kirk Cousins’ strengths. Terez Paylor of Yahoo Sports notes that the Vikings threw the ball 64 percent of the time last season, which was ten percent higher than any of the previous four seasons under head coach Mike Zimmer’s defensive-minded squad—you can bet they’ll be down below 60 percent again this season. Durability is the big concern with Cook, but he’s headed for a three-down role and should also remain involved in the passing game. There’s definite 300-touch upside for the third-year running back, and he’s a high-upside selection in the early rounds of fantasy drafts this summer.

Nate Sudfeld broke his wrist in Thursday night’s loss to the Titans.
It looked like a serious injury when Philly’s backup quarterback left the game in an air cast, and head coach Doug Pederson said Sudfeld will have surgery tomorrow. Fortunately, the Eagles have a very good option in Cody Kessler to be the new No. 2 quarterback, and the team currently has no plans to add more competition.

Landry Jones has signed with the XFL.
After getting released by the Raiders earlier this year, Jones has become the first quarterback to sign with the XFL. Jones spent six years in the NFL, mostly as a backup with the Steelers, and he set Big 12 records in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and completions during his college career at Oklahoma. Jones might be the XFL’s best quarterback in its first season.

Keke Coutee’s injury is reportedly an ankle injury.
Coutee got rolled up on pretty good and grabbed his leg, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says that “based on early returns, is not considered a major [injury].” More tests are likely coming for Coutee, but thankfully there’s reason for optimism right now after many people were assuming the worst. If this is a high-ankle sprain for Coutee, it might make him questionable for Week 1.

The Cardinals officially signed Michael Crabtree.
This was reportedly going to happen a couple of weeks ago and was said to be close last night before being made official late. Crabtree joins a team with a bunch of young receivers around future Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald, so there’s a chance the veteran receiver has a big role for an offense that’s expected to use a bunch of four-receiver sets. Crabtree could quickly become a key target for Kyler Murray down in the red zone, but he’ll likely start on the waiver wire in most 2019 fantasy leagues.

The Colts are expected to make a decision on their Week 1 quarterback next weekend.
Colts head coach Frank Reich said: “You have to be able to make a call and move from there whether we’re full speed with Andrew [Luck] after that third preseason game or if at that point we are going with Jacoby [Brissett].” Indianapolis plays their third preseason game on Saturday, August 24, and teams get more into their Week 1 preparation after that third week of the preseason. Because the Colts are extremely confident in their backup Brissett, they are apparently prepared to rally around him to open the season if Luck doesn’t make enough progress to be a practice participant at that point. At least this timeline will give most people a better idea of Luck’s status ahead of fantasy drafts.

Keke Coutee gets carted to the locker room during preseason game.
Coutee grabbed his knee before getting carted off, which probably isn’t a good sign. It didn’t look good, but hopefully the second-year receiver just suffered a hyperextension or just felt some discomfort, but we’ll update you as more information becomes available. Coutee is currently locked in as Houston’s slot receiver and has been talked up by quarterback Deshaun Watson this year.
