Rodney Anderson | Free Agent RB

Rodney Anderson (knee) has been cleared to practice for the Bengals.

The rookie running back avoided the PUP list despite coming off an ACL tear suffered last season at Oklahoma, and he’s now passed his physical and will hit the field sooner than expected. This is a great sign for Anderson’s progress, and he has the talent to quickly rise and become the primary backup on early down behind starter Joe Mixon. The knee injury is a big reason Anderson lasted until the sixth round of this year’s draft, and he could become a major steal that potentially contributes early in his career.

Andrew Luck | Retired QB

The Colts no longer believe Andrew Luck’s leg injury is a bone issue.

On a conference call with reporters, general manager Chris Ballard said, “the front of the ankle (high ankle-ish) needs to be addressed.” So basically, the mystery continues in regards to the superstar quarterback’s health, and it’s unclear whether or not “addressed” could mean surgery. Hopefully the injury heals in time for the opener by Luck continuing to simply rest, but early drafters may want to downgrade him to at least the bottom of the top five at the position.

AJ McCarron | Free Agent QB

A.J. McCarron suffered a thumb injury.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle says McCarron may miss the preseason with the injury. This obviously isn’t ideal as McCarron looked to get live game reps in Bill O’Brien’s offense during the preseason, but it sounds like he should be OK to back up Deshaun Watson in Week 1. The Texans are expected to sign another quarterback soon.

Jake Butt | Retired TE

Jake Butt (knee) is expected to be a full participant in today’s practice.

Coming off his third ACL tear, this is Butt’s first full practice of the year, so it’s great to see him make another recovery. After the addition of first-round tight end Noah Fant in this year’s draft, Butt is not expected to be a fantasy asset in 2019. But hopefully he can stay healthy and contribute for his team in real life.

Damien Williams | Free Agent RB

Damien Williams is practicing for the Chiefs today.

Williams missed over a week with a hamstring injury, so it’s good to see him back out there, indicating the issue wasn’t too serious. Williams is currently locked in as Kansas City’s starting running back and should be the clear leader in the backfield this season, but it’ll still be interesting to see how much other players in the backfield mix in with the first team during the preseason. According to FantasyPros ADP, Williams is currently being drafted as a third-round pick in fantasy leagues.

Amari Cooper | Free Agent WR

Amari Cooper is dealing with a foot injury.

Cooper has been banged up all summer, and this isn’t thought to be a huge deal as the Cowboys will take things slow with their star receiver during the summer. However, Cooper is dealing with a plantar fascia irritation, according to Mike Fisher of 105.3 The Fan; but Fisher adds that a source tells him the “bottom line” is that Cooper will be fine and it is not a long-term issue. Also keep in mind that Cooper played through a plantar fascia issue during his stellar rookie year when he had 1,070 receiving yards. Don’t expect Cooper to play in the preseason, but we expect he’ll be ready to go for Week 1.

Niles Paul | Retired TE

Niles Paul has announced his retirement.

After being drafted in the fifth round of the 2011 draft by the Redskins, Paul played seven season in Washington before playing his final season in Jacksonville last year. Paul’s career ends with 78 receptions for 954 yards and two touchdowns, but he was a strong contributor as a run blocker and did well to play eight NFL seasons after transitioning from wide receiver to a tight end/fullback type of role. The University of Nebraska product also selected as the 2016 Ed Block Courage Award winner on the Redskins. We wish Paul the best of luck in his post-playing life.
