The Packers released wide receiver Jail Davis.

Davis was claimed off waivers from the Giants in May. He’ll look to land with another team quickly so he can try to earn a roster spot this season.

The Panthers are “cautiously optimistic” Cam Newton (foot) will be ready for Week 1.

Newton is said to be dealing with a mid-foot sprain. The former league MVP has played through injuries in the past, and we don’t anticipate this will be any different. Expect Newton to be suited up for September 8 against the Rams, but perhaps this injury can be the tiebreaker that downgrades Newton if you’re stuck between him and a couple of other quarterbacks to draft at the deep position.

The Saints have cut Rishard Matthews.

ESPN’s Field Yates reports Matthews was released with a “left squad designation”, so it sounds like Matthews went AWOL. This probably isn’t good for Matthews’ chances of landing with another team, and the 29-year-old does not need to be rostered in dynasty leagues.

Cody Kessler is officially in concussion protocol.

Kessler left very early in tonight’s preseason game against the Jaguars, and the Eagles have been down to Clayton Thorson as their lone healthy quarterback. Hopefully Kessler is feeling better soon as he looks to return to the field and compete for the backup quarterback role to open the season while Nate Sudfeld recovers from a left wrist injury.

The 49ers signed Brandon Wilds.

The former undrafted running back hasn’t been with a team since the Cardinals waived him in May, but he lands in one of the better offensive systems in the league with the Niners. This signing might not bode well for the statuses of Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson Jr., but Wilds has an uphill climb to make San Francisco’s 53-man roster.

X-Rays on Cam Newton’s foot came back negative, according to Ian Rapoport.

There will be more tests tomorrow, but it sounds like Newton will escape with just a minor injury that shouldn’t put his Week 1 status in danger. If nothing else, though, this is another reminder that Cam—one of the biggest and most mobile quarterbacks in NFL history—is entering his age-30 campaign.

Tom Savage is in concussion protocol.

Just like in the regular season, Savage must clear concussion protocol before he can play again. This isn’t Savage’s first concussion, which is a concern, but hopefully he’s feeling better and can get back on the field soon. Detroit signed quarterback Josh Johnson this morning.
