Join now >Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said there is a competition for the starting quarterback job.
Blake Bortles played poorly in Thursday night’s preseason game, and—whether it was planned or not—was replaced by Chad Henne with the first-team offense, and the veteran got his chance with the starting offensive line and receivers well into the third quarter. Henne clearly outplayed Bortles, delivering strikes for dropped touchdowns in his first drive, displaying a much quicker release and better accuracy than the starter. Marrone knows that he needs quality quarterback play if the Jags are going anywhere in 2017, and he’s not getting it from Bortles right now. This newly-open battle could go into the fourth week of the preseason.

Cody Core catches one pass in preseason Week 1.
Core ran an in-breaking route in the second quarter and quarterback A.J. McCarron threw an accurate pass for Core to come down with. The Bengals are deep and talented at receiver, so Core is probably battling for a roster spot.

Maxx Williams catches 40-yard pass in second Ravens preseason game.
Williams lined up in the backfield and was hit in the flat on a play-action fake before breaking a tackle and weaving through much of the defense, showing some surprising shiftiness. He had two receptions for 48 yards total in the game. Benjamin Watson is probably the starter, but the 2015 second-round pick Williams has a chance for a nice role if he’s healthy.

Jets receiver ArDarius Stewart catches one-of-two targets in Week 1 of the preseason.
The third-round pick out of Alabama had one reception for eight yards and is looking to be a big factor in New York’s offense during his rookie season. Both Stewart and fellow rookie Chris Hansen could end up playing a lot in their first NFL season.

Javorius Allen leads Ravens in rushing in second preseason game.
Allen carried ten times for 40 yards, including a long of 14 yards. The third-year running back also caught all three of his targets for 16 yards. Starter Terrance West (six carries, -2 yards) struggled to get anything going, but the offensive line did him no favors. Still, Allen looks good and probably shouldn’t be counted out in Baltimore’s backfield as someone they selected in the fourth round in 2015.

Alex Erickson leads Bengals in receiving in Week 1 of the preseason.
The 2016 undrafted receiver from Wisconsin had three receptions for 50 yards against Tampa Bay. He’s looking to make the Bengals’ final roster, but he’ll need to keep playing well to crack it.

Quarterback controversy? Chad Henne gets first-team snaps in second preseason game.
With Jaguars starter Blake Bortles not looking sharp, Henne was inserted into the game in the second quarter. Henne ripped two perfect throws to the end zone for potential touchdowns, but they were both dropped by receivers Keelan Cole and Allen Robinson. It would not be surprising to see the Jaguars make the switch, or give Henne reps with the first team at the very least.
