Join now >Lucky Whitehead is out 4-6 weeks with his broken foot, according to Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport says they are getting another opinion to see if surgery would speed the recovery. On the optimistic side, four-week recovery would mean Whitehead would be ready to practice for Week 2 of the season. However, it’s also possible the Jets place Whitehead on the PUP list, which would cost him the first six weeks of the season.

Rookie running back Joe Williams flashes in preseason game against the Chiefs.
The rookie from Utah looked really good in his first NFL preseason action, carrying seven times for 60 yards. He did drop a toss, but quickly picked it up and was able to pick up about ten yards on the play. Carlos Hyde only got two early carries and appears locked in as the starter, but Williams will probably push for playing time if he keeps it up.

Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake is in concussion protocol.
Just as Jay Ajayi gets cleared of his concussion and exits the protocol, teammate Kenyan Drake enters the protocol. Ajayi missed a couple weeks with his concussion, but each concussion is different (Steelers receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster was cleared after only a couple days after his concussion on Friday). Chances are Drake won’t be playing in the Dolphins’ second preseason game on Thursday.

Matt Barkley plays well in 49ers’ opening preseason game.
Barkley was 10/17 for 168 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. He had some opportunities in the red zone, but they couldn’t cash in with a touchdown. Moving forward, Barkley might give up some more second-team work to rookie C.J. Beathard, who played very well in his first preseason game.

The Steelers activated WR Sammie Coates from the PUP List.
Coates had arthroscopic knee surgery and is right on schedule with his mid-August return. There’s some speculation Coates’ roster spot might not be safe, but the talented 24-year-old receiver will try to show he’s healthy and can make an impact for Pittsburgh. Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Eli Rogers are all very likely locks to make the Steelers, so Coates could be battling Darrius Heyward-Bey and Justin Hunter for a final spot or two (unless the Steelers keep seven receivers).

C.J. Beathard plays great in NFL preseason debut.
The third-round rookie from Iowa was 7/11 for 101 yards and two touchdowns. He showed good pocket presence and escaped pressure—especially on his 44-yard touchdown throw in the third quarter, which he threw on the run after evading and scrambling to his left. The Niners obviously selected Beathard in the draft because they like him, so don’t be surprised if he challenges Matt Barkley for the backup job behind Brian Hoyer.

Brian Hoyer goes 1/4 for three yards in preseason debut for the Niners.
Kyle Shanahan’s starter did make a solid throw on a third down, but it was overturned because of a penalty. Hoyer and the starters should get more action in the second preseason game next Saturday in a tough test versus Denver.
