Landry Jones | Free Agent QB

The Raiders signed Landry Jones.

Oakland signed Mike Glennon to backup Derek Carr last week, and now the team has added a third veteran quarterback in the former Steeler. This doesn’t preclude the Raiders from drafting a quarterback in next month’s draft, but they now have three quarterbacks they feel good about on the depth chart heading into offseason training. Perhaps Jones will push Glennon for the backup job leading up to the season.

Jerick McKinnon | Free Agent RB

Niners GM John Lynch confirms Jerick McKinnon will be on the team in 2019.

McKinnon’s salary won’t become guaranteed until April 1, which has caused some to speculate that he might be cut, but Lynch confirmed the dynamic running back will be on the roster this season. This makes the signing of Tevin Coleman more of a head-scratcher, but San Francisco certainly has plenty of depth and talent for Kyle Shanahan to work with in the backfield—and the team deserves credit for being able to add a player of Coleman’s caliber at two years, $10 million in free agency. The Niners might feed the ball to their running backs in space this season, but it’s a mystery as to how touches will be divided with Matt Breida also in the mix with McKinnon and Coleman. Hopefully there’s more clarity on the situation throughout the summer.

Rob Gronkowski | Retired TE

Rob Gronkowski has announced his retirement from the NFL.

Gronk just made the announcement on his Instagram page, and it can be read in the link below. This is a bit of a shocker considering the expectation was that Gronkowski would return for another season, but the decision was the All-Pro tight end’s alone, and he’s walking away after nine seasons with the Patriots. While a physical playing style and injuries led to some missed games throughout his career, Gronkowski is arguably the greatest player at his position in NFL history—and easily the most dominant. His career ends with 521 receptions, 7,861 yards, and 79 touchdowns (15.1 yards per reception) in the regular season. Gronk will also leave the game with plenty of postseason success, including another 12 touchdowns and three rings—two of which he was healthy for and played a key role in during the Big Game. The final catch of his career set up the game-winning touchdown in Super Bowl LIII, so there isn’t really a better way to go out. Gronkowski is a lock for the Hall of Fame, and he is sure to have plenty of post-career success in entertainment or whatever path he chases.

Jeremy Maclin | Retired WR

Jeremy Maclin announced his retirement from the NFL.

Maclin announced his retirement at his wife’s baby shower, so it’s kind of nice that the end of his playing career is the beginning of something else. However, this is a pretty big surprise for Maclin considering he’ll turn just 31 in May and has played at a very high level in the league. The former first-round pick’s career ends with 514 receptions for 6,835 yards and 49 touchdowns for the Eagles, Chiefs, and Ravens across nine seasons (including his 2013 season which was wipes out entirely by a torn ACL). A hamstring issue kept Maclin out of 2018, and now he’s calling it a career. Maclin’s best season came with Philadelphia in 2014, when he caught 85 passes for 1,318 yards and ten touchdowns as the No. 1 option in Chip Kelly’s offense; and he followed it up with 87 receptions for 1,088 yards and eight touchdowns the next season in Kansas City after signing with the Chiefs in free agency (at a time when many people didn’t think any receivers could have success statistically, Maclin did). Not re-signing Maclin was a big blow to the receiving corps in Kelly’s final year with the Eagles. The former Mizzou Tiger was one of the toughest players at any position in the league, and he had among the best hands and made plenty of clutch plays when he was at his peak. After an excellent playing career, we wish Maclin similar success in his post-NFL life. He says he’ll have a letter and video about his retirement coming soon.

Malcolm Mitchell | Retired WR

Malcolm Mitchell has retired from the NFL.

Mitchell made the announcement at a University of Georgia event, and it comes after he didn’t play in 2017 or 2018 because of knee issues. Mitchell is just 25 years old but has had ten surgeries in his career, and it’s really unfortunate for the former fourth-round pick after he had a very promising rookie season in 2016. The good news is Mitchell appears to have a bright future off the field, as he has a foundation (called Read With Malcolm, located at readwithmalcolm.com) that helps children learn how to read. During Mitchell’s lone regular season, he caught 32 passes for 401 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games. It was a short career, but Patriots fans will certainly always remember the former Georgia Bulldog, as Mitchell was huge in New England’s epic Super Bowl LI comeback against the Falcons, catching six passes for 70 yards including five receptions for 63 yards and four first downs in the fourth quarter of the victory. We wish Mitchell the best of luck in his post-playing career.

Mike Glennon | Free Agent QB

The Raiders have signed Mike Glennon.

Oakland recently released A.J. McCarron, and they’ve found their replacement with Glennon, who was recently released by Arizona. The veteran will back up Derek Carr in 2019 as one of the steadier No. 2 options in the league.

Jake Fisher | Free Agent TE

The Bills are signing Jake Fisher.

A former second-round pick of the Bengals as an offensive tackle from Oregon, Fisher is making the position switch to tight end, and the Bills are giving him his opportunity there. As a former offensive lineman, Fisher should obviously be one of the better blocking tight ends in football, which could be enough to earn him a sizable role on offense; but it’s difficult to envision much fantasy value in 2019.
