Join now >Tra Carson starts for the Lions in Week 8.
While most people expected Ty Johnson to get the start and most of the work for Detroit with Kerryon Johnson (knee) out, it was Carson that led the Lions backfield against the Giants, carrying 12 times for 34 yards. Meanwhile, Johnson had seven carries for 25 yards (along with one reception for 13 yards), Paul Perkins had three carries for four yards, and J.D. McKissic had one carry for -1 yards (along with three receptions for two yards). Carson was just waived by the Packers less than two weeks ago, so it’s cool to see him get an opportunity like this in Detroit; the 2016 undrafted free agent had never had an NFL carry until this season. In what looks like a full-blown committee backfield, no one from this group will be a highly recommended fantasy option against the Raiders next week.

Jared Cook (ankle) has been ruled out for Week 8.
This is Cook’s second consecutive missed game as he deals with an ankle injury. Facing a Cardinals team that’s given up an eye-popping number of fantasy points to opposing tight ends this season, Josh Hill is worth a look in deeper leagues in particular.

James Conner (shoulder) is listed as doubtful for Week 9.
Conner didn’t practice this week because of his AC joint injury suffered in Monday’s win over the Dolphins, and unfortunately it looks like he’ll be out this Sunday against the Colts. With Benny Snell (knee) out, Jaylen Samuels is set for a heavy workload for Pittsburgh. Conner being listed as doubtful instead of out ahead of the weekend, that could indicate he won’t miss too much time with the injury, but we’ll see.

Benny Snell had meniscus surgery.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says Snell had his meniscus trimmed and is expected to miss two-to-three weeks. The Steelers are fortunately getting Jaylen Samuels back this week from his own knee injury. Snell does not need to be held in redraft leagues.

Matthew Stafford stays hot in Lions’ Week 8 loss.
Stafford was 25/32 for 342 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, leading the Lions to a 31-26 victory over the Giants. He hit Marvin Hall for a 49-yard score on a deep ball and hit Kenny Golladay for his other two touchdowns. This performance gives Stafford 706 passing yards, seven passing touchdowns, and two interceptions over the past two games, and he’s averaging 20.2 fantasy points per game this season. With Kerryon Johnson (knee) currently on injured reserve, the Lions might stick with a pass-heavy approach (and Stafford has at least 30 passing attempts in every game this season). He’ll be a strong fantasy option next week against the Raiders.

Multiple reports: Kenyan Drake will not play in Week 8.
With the trade deadline coming up on Tuesday, Drake is not playing on Monday night. Things could fall apart with teams Miami may be negotiating a trade with, but it certainly looks like Drake is going to be traded. He’s worth taking a look at as a speculative trade candidate for your fantasy roster in case he lands in an ideal spot, but it’s difficult to predict potential landing spots for the versatile running back.

Cam Newton (foot) returning is “a long way off,” according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
ESPN’s Josina Anderson first reported that Newton is going to Green Bay to visit foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, and Rapoport says the visit is “to learn why his condition isn’t improving.” It appeared (and was previously reported) that Newton was close to a return, but that does not appear to be the case. It’ll be Kyle Allen under center for the Panthers for the foreseeable future. Newton has upside if and when he returns to the lineup this season, but he’s not a must-hold in redraft leagues. Perhaps more information will become available later today or tomorrow, though.
